mad-as-a-marine-biologist:

For those of you who ask for advice on ‘what to do next’, this is a great website from Conservation International on how to get there.

We liked this post on Tumblr, checked out the website – and think it’s worth taking a look at if you’ve got an interest in a career in conservation.

Sometimes career goals and dreams can seem incompatible – for example, taking an environmental job and living in New York City. But actually, the research shows that city dwellers have a smaller carbon footprint than urbanites.

In New York alone, we see over 200 jobs with the key word “conservation.” Never mind an amazing grad program at Columbia University, you can get a Master’s in Climate and Society.

Assumption can be the root cause of missed opportunity – don’t let that happen!

Recyclebank Hiring, Gets Green Thumbs Up from WSJ

March 3rd, 2011 Comments off

Recyclebank, a company that allows you to earn rewards for your recycling efforts, tops the Wall Street Journal’s top 10 ranking of Clean-Tech companies. They’ve got news even Oscar the Grouch can smile about – 20+ job postings, with many of them based in Manhattan. The company currently has programs in 29 states and the U.K. and is expanding.

If you’re interested in Green Careers, go beyond job postings and look for local events such as career or environmental education fairs. Here’s a job search tip: Don’t bring a paper resume to a green company. Try putting a QR code on a business card that links to your resume—and put that QR code on recycled paper. Here’s an article with the 411 on how—and why—to do this.

NYC Grows Solar (We See Jobs)

February 24th, 2011 Comments off

Here comes the sun: In 2010, both New York City and neighboring Westchester county doubled the amount of photovoltaic installations in the region in 2010. Chris Meehan of CleanEnergyAuthority.com reports

“According to Con Edison, a subsidiary of Consolidated Edison, Inc. (NYSE: ED), the utility for the region, its customers installed 4.5 megawatts of photovoltaic generation in 2010. That’s more than double the 1.9 megawatts of solar installed in 2009.

By the end of 2009, the company had 8.5 megawatts of solar in its system. The number of actual installations completed in 2010 jumped to 203 from 134 the previous year.”

There currently 100+ job listings with the keyword solar in Manhattan alone, including jobs at GE Corporate. ConEdison is also partnering with the City University of New York to streamline the application process for meters used to measure activity and use—a clear sign that they expect and encourage the increase in photovoltaic installations to continue.

Bottom line: Even in Manhattan, solar is a growing industry.

Jefferies Group, Inc. (NYSE: JEF), a global securities and investment banking firm,  is hosting their 11th annual Global Clean Technology Conference February 23 and 24 (that’s today and tomorrow as we write).

Jeffries announced this event quietly on February 15 via a press release and did not include registration information. This conference appears to be invitation only.

Jeffries says the conference “will feature presentations from over 100 leading public and private companies across the clean technology and renewable energy spectrum, including solar, wind, smart grid, energy storage, biofuels, biomaterials, energy efficiency, energy infrastructure, fuel cells, geothermal, advanced lighting (LEDs), transportation and water.”

Are you interested in working or continuing to work in the green tech industry? Want to press your nose up against the window and learn what’s going on inside? (Tip: A great way to build connections through a conference presentation you cannot attend is to listen to the proceedings, then follow up with a speaker with a thoughtful e-mail or handwritten note. You can often do this through Twitter, but this one doesn’t seem to be shared.)

You can register here to see selected Webcasts. Once you’ve registered, you’ll see a list of programs (no details) and hyperlinks to the 31 presentations that will be made public
