NYC Grows Solar (We See Jobs)

February 24th, 2011

Here comes the sun: In 2010, both New York City and neighboring Westchester county doubled the amount of photovoltaic installations in the region in 2010. Chris Meehan of CleanEnergyAuthority.com reports

“According to Con Edison, a subsidiary of Consolidated Edison, Inc. (NYSE: ED), the utility for the region, its customers installed 4.5 megawatts of photovoltaic generation in 2010. That’s more than double the 1.9 megawatts of solar installed in 2009.

By the end of 2009, the company had 8.5 megawatts of solar in its system. The number of actual installations completed in 2010 jumped to 203 from 134 the previous year.”

There currently 100+ job listings with the keyword solar in Manhattan alone, including jobs at GE Corporate. ConEdison is also partnering with the City University of New York to streamline the application process for meters used to measure activity and use—a clear sign that they expect and encourage the increase in photovoltaic installations to continue.

Bottom line: Even in Manhattan, solar is a growing industry.
