You can also apply for in-store positions by walking into the store you would like to work at. Staples stores are equipped with computer kiosks that you can use to apply, which is a great feature for those who want to try and make a personal connection, or don’t have access to a computer or reliable internet connection.
Before you sit down to start the Staples job application, make sure that you will have a long stretch of uninterrupted time: the application is very long, and will likely take you about an hour to complete.
Before you can fill out the job application, you will need to create an account on the Staples hiring site. Creating an account will only take a couple minutes, and you will need to provide your name, phone number, address, email address, and social security number to complete the account creation process.
After you create your account, you will be asked to answer a series of pre-employment questions. These questions are focused on the tasks of the job, and include questions like:
“How much experience do you have providing customer service in jobs that require working directly with the public?”
“How confident are you in your ability to provide our customers the highest level of customer service possible?”
You should answer each question honestly — these aren’t meant to be trick questions. They’re asked only to help Staples learn more about you and your experiences.
Following the pre-employment questions, you will be asked to provide your availability and scheduling preferences. You will also be give the chance to upload your resume, which is something that you should definitely take advantage of if you already have one prepared. You will also be asked to provide your education and two references (no family members).
After you’ve done all of the above, Staples will require you to complete an assessment. The assessment is fairly long, but it’s important to read each question carefully before you answer. To give you an idea of what to expect, here are a few sample questions:
“When you need to, you take it easy at work”
“You don’t care what people think of you”
“You are somewhat of a thrill-seeker”
If you aren’t sure how to answer a particular question, take a moment to think about why they’ve chosen to ask it. What are they trying to learn about you?
Also, as a general rule, you should answer the questions strongly. Strongly disagreeing or strongly agreeing with a statement is normally much better than providing a neutral answer — Staples wants to know what you would do in a given situation, not what you might do.
During the application process, Staples will ask for your permission to perform a pre-employment background check. If you don’t consent to the background check, you will be unable to complete the application.

The first Staples store was opened just outside of Boston in 1986. By 1996, the company had cracked the Fortune 500, with sales in excess of $3 billion. That same year, a proposed merger between Staples and OfficeMax was shot down by the FTC, on the grounds that it would lead to an increase of prices in areas where Office Depot wasn’t present.
Today, there are more than 2,200 Staples stores in the world. Nearly 1,600 of those are in the United States, making it one of the top office supply retailers in the country.
