The Books A Million Job Application Process

The Books A Million job application is very long -- in fact, it's one of the longest that we've ever seen. You'll need to set aside between 45-60 minutes of your time to complete it. Before you can apply for a position, you'll have to use Books A Million's job search functionality to find an opening near you. Note: Once you find a position that interests you, make sure that you write down the store number provided in the job description. You will need that later on. The application is broken up into two main sections. To help you prepare and guide you through it, we've outlined the details below.
Section 1
Before you can apply for a job, you will have to create an account. The account creation process is simple, and requires only your name, email address, and a password. The first section of the application is designed to collect your personal information. You'll need to provide your name, phone number, address, employment history, social security number, birthday, work history, employment history, availability, scheduling preferences, and more. There's a lot of information you'll need to provide, but the section as a whole is pretty straightforward and shouldn't take more than 10-25 minutes to complete if you have all of your information prepared beforehand. During this section, you will provided with an opportunity to tell the company why you would like to work for them. This is not required, but it's highly recommended. If you aren't quite sure what to say, it would be a good idea to read about the company and their values. If any of their values align with your own, then that would be an excellent topic to write about in the box.
Section 2
The second section of the application is an assessment, and it's really long (72 questions) -- realistically, it will probably take you at least 30 minutes to get through it. From Books-A-Million's point of view, the assessment helps them determine if you would make a good fit for their company. From our point of view, it's just a pain. But you'll have to get through it if you want the job. To give you an idea of how the assessment works, here are a few example questions: "How frequently do you resolve problems or find errors that others could not?" "If a company provides 1 1/4 vacation days to its employees every month, how many vacation days does an employee get every year?" "It is Friday and your work shift ends in 5 minutes. A customer approaches you and says he has a few questions for you about a book series. You know the conversation with the customer will take 20 minutes. Which response best matches your reply to the customer?" For each question, you'll have a choice of five answers. Read each answer very carefully, and take a moment to think about what Books-A-Million is trying to learn about you by asking each question. As an additional tip, make sure that you answer each question strongly. It's much better to strongly disagree or strongly agree with a statement than it is to take a neutral stance. Remember, they're asking questions because they want to see if you're a good fit, not because they're particularly interested in you as a human being. It's not a date.
