Abercrombie and Fitch was founded by David Abercrombie and Ezra Fitch in 1892. It was originally a premium sporting goods outfitter, similar to what Orvis is today. They sold products like tents, fishing rods, firearms, and camping gear. That era ended in 1976, when it filed for bankruptcy.
The brand was purchased two years later by Oshman's Sporting Goods, who turned the brand into a mail-order business only before opening a few physical locations in the 1980s. They maintained control of the brand until 1988, when they sold it to The Limited.
Today, there are more than 1,500 Abercrombie and Fitch stores worldwide. More than 300 of those stores are in the United States.
