A Green Spring in New York: Big Signs of Hiring on The Street

May 9th, 2011

Back in April, there were only the faintest signs of spring in Manhattan – you could spot the bird’s nests in Central Park trees, very few leaves. Today, you can only hear the birds — everything is green. We see similar activity in the job market, where it was hard to find openings on Wall Street earlier this year; today there are press releases announcing hiring plans. Today, CNN reported that JP Morgan Chase has over 12,000 openings in the U.S. alone. We see 773 jobs posted in Manhattan with an estimated salary of $80K and above.

Here are other signs of life about town:

  • Private equity firm Blackstone shelled out $160M to buy the top two floors of the former NY Times building. Here are job openings.
  • Boutique investment bank CastleOak securities announced that they’ve grown their headcount by 25% – actual number of hires not disclosed, but they say they are still actively hiring. Positions hiring for include: Institutional Fixed Income Sales, Institutional Equity Sales – Trader, Investment Banking Analyst, Investment Banking Associate.
  • NetApp, selected as one of the top three places to work in Manhattan by Crain’s New York, has 20 or so posted positions with salaries estimated at $80K and above.
  • California-based insurance firm Heffernan Insurance has announced the opening of a Manhattan office.

And, finally, if you’ve decided you want to move out of the Big Apple altogether, First Niagara has announced plans to hire 500 upstate.
