Five Guys was founded in 1986. The ‘five guys’ were Jerry Murrell and his four sons, Jim, Chad, Ben, and Matt. Jerry and all of his sons are currently involved with the company.
It took fifteen years for the company to expand to five locations, but the success of the restaurants convinced the Murrells to expand into other markets. They began franchising in 2003, and by the end of 2004 they were developing more than 300 locations.
The expansion continued at a rapid pace, and by the end of 2012 there were more than 1,000 locations across the United States and Canada.
