JOB TITLE: SPECIAL EDUCATION INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE - SEVERELY HANDICAPPED

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: The job of "Special Education Instructional Aide-Severely Handicapped" assists, tutors and trains exceptional students in a classroom or similar learning situation as instructed by a certificated teacher. Performs a variety of supportive duties for teachers. Under the direct supervision of principal.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

* Performs general duties and plays a major role in assisting the teacher in caring for the physical needs of the children.

* Performs activities such as lifting and moving children, some of whom are in wheelchairs and diapers and some whom have reached adult size.

* Helps the children at lunchtime and carries on a habit training program in etiquette, hygiene, manners and development of skill in using eating utensils.

* Assists teachers and occasional resource specialists, such as speech specialists or physical therapists in helping children to become as independent as possible.

* Assists children with toileting and cleaning after toilet accidents.

* Assists in the preparation of teaching aids and devices.

* Confers with teacher in planning and counseling relative to problems being experienced by individual children.

* Performs such routine tasks as diaper changing, toileting, lifting children from one place to another and arranging furniture and supplies.

* Feeds children in conjunction with teaching them to hold a cup, swallow, chew, tolerate various textures, identify foods, reach and grasp, and feed themselves.

* Assists teachers in providing close attention to every child in the classroom

* Protects the safety of others in the group.

* Administers first aid and prescription medications to special education students for the purpose of providing emergency care in accordance with student's Individualized Education Plan and/or health plans, as well as district, state and federal requirements.

* Administers assistance (e.g., tube feeding to students, toileting, catheterization, diapering) for the purpose of providing appropriate care for children.

* Assists special education students requiring daily care (e.g. toileting, diapering, feeding, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care and/or developing children's daily living activities and behavioral skills (as assigned).

* Monitors and assists individual special education students, classroom, library, playground activities, community outings, vocational sites, public transportation systems, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the safety of assigned students.

* Assists in training for functional life skills, domestic skills, community based instruction and prevocational/vocational skills.

* Oversees and supervises students during classroom activities, in library and on field trips, recess and lunch breaks and/or during play or physical exercise.

* Assists in training for personal hygiene, taking care of personal needs and developing basic self-sufficiencies.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

* Confers with teachers, parents and appropriate community and staff for the purpose of evaluating student progress and participating in parent teacher conferences.

* Attends inservice and staff meetings for the purpose of setting up meetings, receiving and sharing community information and improving skills and knowledge.

* Performs other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS - QUALIFICATIONS:

* Education Required: Graduation from high school or equivalent. College level training is desirable and incumbent employees are expected to avail themselves of specialized Adult School or college courses in this field, as prescribed by district policy.

* Experience Required: Prior paid job-related experience in successfully working with exceptional and regular children in a learning situation.

* Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required: Knowledge of personal hygiene practices and procedures, and safety practices and procedures. Ability to understand the needs of children and possess a genuine liking for children; communicate with children and motivate them to participate in learning activities; learn to teach in special subject matter areas or to teach children who have special learning needs by watching teachers or specialists; develop and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with children and adults; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; supervise children in the classroom and out- of -doors; perform general clerical tasks and learn the operation of office equipment and devices; provide basic physical care to severely handicapped students.

* Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required: CPR/First Aid Certificate, TB test clearance, criminal justice fingerprint clearance, and pre-employment physical and drug test.
