Position Summary:

Administers various forms of respiratory modalities in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Respiratory Care Department.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Sets up and monitors equipment for ventilatory support.
  • May set up and monitor pulse oximetry equipment for continuous measurement of oxygen saturation.
  • Sets up and monitors mechanical ventilators during surgical procedures as required.
  • May set up and monitor equipment for administering oxygen including various types of cannulas and masks.
  • Provides respiratory support and cardiopulmonary resuscitation as required.

Position Qualifications:



Minimum of an Associates degree or equivalent in Respiratory Care. Currently licensed in respiratory care by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Division of Professional Licensure. Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support or equivalent. NRP certification required.



Pulmonary Function Testing RequirementPerforms pulmonary function tests including spirometry, before and after bronchodilator therapy, flow volume loop, maximal voluntary ventilation, lung volume measurement (helium dilution), diffusion capacity (single breath) and methacholine challenge. Performs Maximal Inspiratory and Expiratory airway pressure measurements. Sets up and calibrates equipment as required. Performs clerical duties including setting up patient appointments, filing reports, sending out copies of reports to primary care physicians. Enter charges for services provided into computerized patient information system. NICU Requirements. Sets up and monitors equipment for administering oxygen to newborns. Sets up and monitors equipment for ventilatory support including conventional ventilators and high frequency oscillatory ventilators. Sets up and monitors equipment for continuous measurement of oxygen saturation, end tidal carbon dioxide levels, transcutaneous PO2 and PCO2 levels and ventilator wave forms. Attends high-risk deliveries and provides respiratory support as required, including assisted ventilation, and administration of supplemental oxygen. Administers inhaled nitric oxide. Participates as a member of the neonatal transport team, providing respiratory support as required. Administers surfactant directly into airways via endotracheal tube following department protocol. Performs arterial blood gas analysis. Measures oxygen saturation during care-seat testing for newborns prior to discharge.
