JOB SUMMARY:

To ensure a safe environment and efficient operation of the Medical Center in compliance with Medical Center policies and JCAHO requirements by performing all activities relating to the safety and security of patients, employees, visitors, hospital buildings, equipment and grounds. Conducts investigations and completes reports and forms. Provides security services to staff, patients, medical staff, volunteers and students using knowledge and training provided.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

* High School Graduate or equivalent plus public contact experience

* Security, fire, EMS or Military experience preferred

REPORTS TO/ASSIGNMENTS RECEIVED FROM:

Senior Officer; Security Supervisor; Security Manager; Security Director

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION:

* North Carolina Driver's License (valid with no restrictions)

* Respirator certified within 30 days

* I.A.H.S.S. Basic Health Care Security Officer Training Certification required within one year

* Ability to successfully complete generic and department specific skills validation and competency training to include Security Services Basic Officer Training Program to include subject certification in crisis intervention, pepper foam, handcuffing, etc.

* Notary Certification within first year

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

* Patrols and identifies safety hazards and unsafe conditions that could cause injury to people and/or damage to property.

* Provides security services to help protect people and property against injury or loss.

* Conducts investigations of safety and security incidents that result in loss or damage to property, potential liability, or violation of Medical Center policy, or state or federal statute.

* Proficient in fire safety procedures.

* Provides a wide range of safety/security services and assistance to include patient monitoring activity and access management.

* Enforces the parking policy and patrols the Medical Center parking decks and parking lots to prevent criminal activity and unauthorized parking.

* Maintains security of high-risk and sensitive areas.

* Follows established precautions, protocols and standard operating procedures.

* Attends all JCAHO and department training required by continuing education.

* Provides age/developmentally appropriate assistance in accordance with Age/Developmental Specific Care Guidelines for the specific age groups served.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

* Basic Computer skills.

* Ability to successfully complete generic and department-specific skills validation and competency training.

* Must be able to communicate professionally.

* Must be able to make independent decisions with little involvement of the supervisor.

* Must have and demonstrate problem-solving skills.

* Security personnel are held to the standards of conduct represented in the North Carolina General Statute that regulates private security organizations: Chapter 74 C. Private Protective Services.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

* This position works a set schedule but may be called in to respond to staff shortages and emergencies.

* May be exposed to toxic chemicals or unpleasant odors.

* Contact with patients, visitors, and staff under a wide variety of circumstances.

* Subject to varying and unpredictable situations.

* Handles emergency and crisis situations.

* Subject to many interruptions.

* Occasionally subjected to irregular hours.

* Walks in all weather conditions and on many different surfaces.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

* Must be able to walk a distance of 2500 feet (indoors, level surface) within 10 minutes without apparent physical difficulty.

* Must be able to ascend and descend 4 floors of stairs (86 steps) within 5 minutes without apparent physical difficulty.

* Must be able to lift a 100 lb. object a minimum of 12" from floor, holding for 5 seconds without apparent physical difficulty.

* Must be able to lift a 50 lb. object and move a minimum of 10 feet before contact with floor without apparent difficulty.
