This position has access to and knowledge of extremely sensitive, private and confidential materials. Ability to maintain the highest standard is required with zero tolerance.

All the primary duties within this document will be performed according to established policies, procedures and guidelines within the department and the Medical Center.


1. Prepares patients, properly identifies patient and procures specimens, performs, and evaluates waived, moderately complex and highly complex laboratory analyses on blood and other body fluids. Prioritizes workflow and makes judgments relative to workload.

2. Reviews relevant laboratory reports for extraordinary results and clerical errors before they are reported to the patient's medical record, including reports on procedures processed in reference laboratories.

3. Performs instrument maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting procedures in accordance with defined policies and protocols and logs preventive maintenance of equipment. Logs performance of equipment, including daily temperature and humidity checks.

4. Performs quality control and proficiency testing procedures.

5. Investigates and resolves problems and unusual situations, recommending solutions.

6. Utilizes appropriate computer systems in performance of daily tasks.

7. Participates in the Education Program both within and outside the laboratory to ensure the highest degree of competency within the established scope of patient care.

8. Assist in the implementation of new methodologies and procedures.

9. Participates in implementation of and compliance with standards set by the hospital and regulatory/accrediting agencies.

10. Interfaces with hospital personnel, physicians, staff from other facilities relative to test results and procedure information. Demonstrates appropriate interpersonal skills while performing assigned duties.

11. Maintains adequate level of reagents/supplies to perform testing.

12. Generates appropriate and required documentation of testing and support procedures i.e. corrective action logs.

13. Performs other jobs related duties, special assignments and assist others as appropriate.


1. Education: Associate degree from an accredited MLT program or related field.

2. Licensure/Certificate: ASCP, NCA. MLT required.

3. Experience: One to two years experience preferred but not required.

4. Interpersonal Skills: Exceptional communication skills required to effectively express facts, ideas and views when communicating to all with whom he/she comes in contact. Must be able to focus in the middle of chaos.

5. Essential Technical/Motor Skills: Motor coordination, dexterity and coordination. Ability to type required.

6. Essential Physical Requirements: Moderate amount of physical work, sitting, standing, walking, bending. Must be able to work various hours and shifts. Must be able to move, lifting up to 50 pounds of supplies and maintain equipment.

7. Essential Mental Abilities: Must be detail oriented and organized. Requires high level of mental faculties accompanied by short and long term memory.

8. Essential Sensory Requirements: Vision, hearing, speech at level needed to communicate.

9. Exposure to Hazards: The individual spends over 95% of his/her time in an air-conditioned environment with varying exposure to noise, noxious smells and infectious diseases.
