Essential Duties

The Parks & Gardens Department is seeking a customer focused grounds maintenance worker to assist in our goal of providing safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing parks and facilities to the citizens and visitors of New Hanover County.

The preferred candidate will have a pesticide applicators license and will be proficient in using various hand tools and power equipment to mow, mulch, place sod, fertilize, spray, rake, trim, and remove debris. Additional duties include planting, pruning, removing weeds and applying herbicides to trees, shrubs, and flower beds. These positions may also build and repair irrigation systems, clean restrooms, and operate heavy equipment such as backhoes and tractors. Performs routine maintenance on tools and equipment; and assists with special events by transporting special equipment, installing signage, and directing traffic.

This position requires pre-employment skills testing as part of the hiring process. Selected applicants are required to complete the assessment to be considered for this position. After the closing date for this position applications will be screened by Human Resources.

The Parks & Gardens Department's mission is to maintain and operate parks and facilities that enrich the lives of the community and promote an overall healthier lifestyle. The department manages and maintains over 2,900 acres including parks & athletic facilities, historic Airlie Gardens, public school grounds and County-owned non-park facilities such as the county libraries, the Cape Fear Museum, NHC Jail and Fire Stations.

Minimum Qualifications

Education through the 8th grade and experience in landscaping and grounds maintenance/repair that includes the operation of mowers, power and equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Good driving record.

Hours: Tuesdays: 2:30 pm to 11 pm; Wed-Sat: 7 am to 3:30 pm

Must be flexible to work weekends, holidays, and during emergency situations. Park location assignment may vary depending on the needs of the department.
