The City of Wilmington is accepting applications for the upcoming Firefighter Academy to begin October 15, 2018. Selected applicants will be required to successfully complete the following screenings:

Step #1 Aptitude Test (expected weeks of August 6th - 17th)

Step #2 Strength & Agility Test (expected weeks of August 6th - 17th)

Step #3 Oral Interview (expected weeks of August 6th - 17th)

Step #4 Panel Interview (Expected week of September 4th)

Performs fire control and rescue operations by: entering burning structures; utilizing systematic search procedures to locate and rescue trapped victims and determine safe evacuation paths; locating fire sources and extinguish fire; operating heavy equipment and apparatus; forcing entry into structures; locating hydrants and other sources of water; operating hose lines; examining fire damage, salvage and overhaul; participating in pre-fire planning; serving during Hazmat operations, severe weather operations while frequently working at elevated heights.

Responds to traffic accidents; extricates patients from vehicles using extrication techniques and equipment; provides stabilization first aid and basic life support; mitigates minor Hazmat incidents; secures scenes and extinguishes vehicle fires.

Responds to EMS calls; provides first aid and basic life support as EMT; assists advanced life support providers by operating all rescue and medical equipment and vehicles; communicates with patient and provides transfer of care report.

Participates in continuous professional development by attending training in areas such as fire ground operations, EMT, search and rescue, driver/operator training, NIMS, physical fitness, hazmat operations, water rescue, car seat technician, SCBA technician, and fire boat operations.

Maintains equipment and the facility by performing daily preventative maintenance, testing fire equipment and maintaining standard living conditions in facility.

Performs operational support and administrative duties by facilitating fire prevention education, fire truck displays, station tours, installing smoke detectors and assisting the public in emergency and non-emergency situations.

Performs all other duties as assigned and/or as necessary.
