Summary:

ABOUT THE HEALTH AND MEDICINE DIVISIONThe Health and Medicine Division (HMD) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine aims to help those in government and the private sector make informed health decisions by providing evidence upon which they can rely. Each year, more than 3,000 individuals volunteer their time, knowledge, and expertise to advance the nation's health through the work of HMD.Many of the studies that HMD undertakes are requested by federal agencies and independent organizations; others begin as specific mandates from Congress. While our expert, consensus committees are vital to our advisory role, HMD also convenes a series of forums, roundtables, and standing committees, as well as other activities, to facilitate discussion; discovery; and critical, cross-disciplinary thinking.JOB

SUMMARY

The Manager of Internal Communications and Program Support determines and develops procedures, projects, and other activities to support program staff. Coordinates several of HMD's internal programs related to organizational research and support, internal communications, and procedural guidance. Handles inquiries, organizes meetings, and develops materials in support of Executive Office activities. Ensures the activities meet stated objectives. May assists in supervising support staff. May assist senior staff in the development of projects related to HMD's functioning or the quality of its procedures.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIESLeads assigned program(s) or project(s). Communicates with and facilitates the flow of information among staff working on programs and staff in the division Executive Office and central offices. Identifies and gathers organizational research materials. Conducts background research. Synthesizes and edits research findings and technical data. Determines relevance of data and information.Prepares materials relating to program or project activities.Assists with development, communication, and implementation of policies and procedures relating to various processes, including GBEC, bias and conflict of interest, internal communication, and FACA compliance. Develops and maintains systems for tracking key project documents and milestonesServes as lead person for coordinating, organizing, and maintaining HMD's intranet program (Cecil Says). Responsible for facilitating aspects of internal communications within HMD.Organizes meetings. Develops agendas, invites presenters and participants, oversees meeting logistics, and prepares written summaries. Helps design, lead, or teach sessions for staff on such topics relevant to the work and functioning of the projects in the division.Assigns tasks and provides guidance and feedback to staff. May assist with supervising and mentoring staff. Serves as a resource to support staff.Works on related duties and special projects as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONSRequired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of issues in applicable discipline. Ability to solve varied and complex problems using originality and ingenuity. Ability to operate using appreciable latitude for independent judgment and action. Ability to work successfully in a team environment. Ability to develop relationships with co-workers and employees in other National Academies' departments through effective communication. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees.Minimum Education/Training

Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent knowledge.

Minimum Experience:

Three years of related professional experience.

Preferred Education and Experience:

Advanced degree in a related field. National Academies experience strongly preferred.

Physical Capabilities:

Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time. Ability to travel.

Responsibilities

/Controls: Reports to program officer or director. Sets objectives with supervisor and receives input and advice as needed. Assists in the supervision of project/program staff.

Work Environment:

Office environment, with occasional travel between National Academies' facilities and to off-site meeting/sponsor locations.
