Responsibilities

The Corporate Communications & External Affairs team is part of the larger Marketing organization and is comprised of Corporate Communications, Public Relations, Executive Communications, Social Media and Editorial teams.We are creators. We are storytellers. We are passionate about sharing the Company's mission, vision, values and stories in order to establish Viasat as a premier global communications company-bringing high-speed, highly-reliable internet and communications services anywhere-on the ground, in the air and at sea.The Communications Specialist, Government Systems will focus on creating and implementing integrated communications programs around Viasat's defense business that will generate positive media coverage, strong storylines and drive increases in social engagement. The right candidate will be fearless in their approach to creative story-telling and have a passion for media relations and social media.

Responsibilities

include:

PlanningDevelop and implement strategic, compelling, and impactful PR & Social Media programs that tell Viasat's defense business narrative-highlighting key initiatives, industry trends, company news, leadership and technology/customer/partner programPublic RelationsCreate and execute proactive PR plans around key themes, announcements, and launches-secure leadership approvals Draft press releases and pitches, inclusive of new product, service, customer, and partner content Build, cultivate and maintain relationships with key business, local and defense trade press Social MediaElevate Viasat's Government social media presence through targeted content and engagement strategies Collaborate with blog, marketing, and creative teams to plan, create, curate, schedule and execute a regular social media content cadence of compelling on-brand visual and written content to support business objectives, PR strategies, and events Manage community of social media followers and grow relationships with key defense/government influencers, where appropriate Stay abreast of social media best practices and trends, and utilize them to inform content strategy Thought LeadershipDevelop and execute thought leadership campaigns, inclusive of planning, drafting and submitting for awards, keynotes, and high-level speakerships Works with our editorial content team to generate ideas for the corporate blog, podcast series and more MeasurementTrack, benchmark and analyze media coverage and social media KPIs; provide recommendations for continuous improvement This position reports to the Vice President of Corporate Communications & External Affairs, and works directly with the Head of Social Media and the Government Systems Marketing & Leadership teams This position can be based in Carlsbad or Washington, DC

Requirements

7+ years of communications experience - either agency or in-houseStrong knowledge of MS PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and social media platformsPassionate, positive self-starter who enjoys working in a cross-functional team environmentAbility to plan and execute multiple projects in a fast-paced environmentSuperior project management and time management skillsHighly organized with depth in planning and executionImpeccable writing, editing and proofreading; must be able to communicate concepts effectivelyConfident communicator and presenter, with an ability to present plans to senior leadership teamsStrategic, creative thinker comfortable with generating ideas, plans and getting those plans across the finish lineAbility to collaborate with design teams to develop content, as well as create visual and written content independentlyUS Citizenship or Permanent Resident StatusAbility to travel up to 30%Ability to work after-hours and occasional weekendsPreferencesExperience working in defense/government markets a plusExperience with working on social media programs for a large brand a plusProven ability to manage and track cross-functional projectsAbility to plan and execute multiple projects in a fast-paced environmentTo learn more about this site and other office locations, please click here!
