The SSA Internship Program (Program) provides individuals who are currently enrolled in or accepted for enrollment and seeking a degree, diploma, or certificate in qualifying educational institutions/programs with developmental experiences in the Federal Government. The Program is intended to provide clear paths and potential careers in the civil service.

Responsibilities

Program participant(s) are placed on excepted service appointments for an initial period NTE 1 year. Appointments may be extended.

NOTE: Position is being announced as a temporary appointment not to exceed 1 YEAR but may be terminated earlier due to budgetary restrictions.

This program provides substantive, developmental work assignments that prepare incumbents for placement in a Contact Representative target position. The intern will be given orientation to SSA and basic orientation in the functions and operations of the organization to which the intern is assigned.

Note: A work schedule will be established that does not interfere with the academic schedule. This Program is not to exceed 1 YEAR, may be extended. This is a developmental program while you complete your education. After successful completion of the Program, you may be eligible for a noncompetitive conversion to a term (not to exceed 1-4 years) or permanent appointment.

If selected for this position, your typical work assignments may include:

* Operating office machines, such as a telephone, copy machine, scanner, fax machine, and desktop computer;

* Answering telephones and referring callers to staff members or taking messages as appropriate;

* Assisting management with organizing the office;

* Interviewing claimants for replacement Social Security cards; and

* Filing, sorting documents and preparing mailing materials.

* Must be enrolled in a qualifying educational institution.

* Must be in good academic standing.

* Current grade report must show a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

* Security and/or background investigation required.

* Job offers are contingent on background / security investigation results.

* Selectees are required to serve a trial period.

* Relocation expenses will not be paid.

* Selective Service Registration, if applicable (www.sss.gov).

* All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement.

Qualifications

To qualify for the Program, applicants must be a student currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment and seeking a degree, diploma, or certificate in a qualifying educational institution or program (including awardees of the Harry S. Truman Foundation Scholarship Program) on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled.

Proof of education and enrollment must be submitted with your application package and received by the closing date of the announcement.

Candidates must meet the basic qualification requirements for the positions being filled, including any positive education requirements and/or selective placement factors.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY

Students must be:

* at least 16 years old (minors under the age of 18 must submit a work permit if selected)

* enrolled in or accepted for enrollment and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution

* be in good academic standing

* have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 as documented on the most recent grade report

* carry at least a half-time course load as defined by the education institution (may carry less than half-time in the term immediately prior to graduating)

For GS-2: High school diploma or equivalent.

For GS-3: Completion of 1 academic year of post-high school study.

For GS-4: Completion of 2 academic years of post-high school study.
