The Public Works Department is recruiting for the position of Park Maintenance Worker. This position performs a wide variety of gardening and landscape maintenance tasks. One position is available and a list is being established.

TITLE: Park Maintenance Worker

DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation


Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of gardening and landscape maintenance tasks including minor tree trimming and minor irrigation repair. Performs related responsibilities as required.


This is the entry level in the Park Maintenance Worker series. Positions in this class normally require some prior landscape maintenance experience. A Park Maintenance Worker normally performs a wide variety of semi-skilled to skilled landscape maintenance tasks. Incumbents may be expected to operate landscape maintenance equipment on a training basis.


* Prunes trees and shrubs using hand or power saws, either independently or with and assistant.

* Abates weeds and pests through the use of chemical applications.

* Maintains turf areas by edging, fertilizing, sweeping, spraying and aerating.

* Plants and removes trees, shrubs and plants.

* Inspects and evaluates the work of contractors to ensure they are in accordance with contract provisions and City maintenance specifications.

* Prepares compliance and inspection reports and maintains and updates various records and logs.

* Coordinates special projects as assigned.

* Performs a variety of landscape maintenance tasks including storm drain maintenance during inclement weather.

* Maintains inventory on truck and equipment parts.

* Cleans parking lots and other park areas.

* Controls weeds by hand pulling, weed whipping and spraying.

* Empties trash containers and otherwise maintains the appearance of grounds areas.

* Assists in the maintenance, repair, and installation of irrigation systems.

* Trains less experienced personnel.

* Maintains manuals and updates division resource materials.

* Reads and interprets landscape plans and specifications.

* Ensures the use of safe working methods, procedures, and techniques.

* Responds to citizen complaints and explains park related rules and other applicable regulations to park patrons.

* Communicates with other departments when issues arise in the parks where their assistance is required.

* Responds to emergency and after hour calls.

* Performs related duties as required.


This position reports to Park Maintenance Supervisor or Urban Forestry Supervisor and does not supervise.

Qualifications / Requirements:DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

* Tree pruning techniques, methods and equipment.

* Basic methods, tasks, materials and equipment used in landscaping and ground maintenance.

* Chemicals and proper application techniques.

* Methods, techniques and safety precautions necessary to meet the requirements of the position.

* The identification and growth characteristics of common shrubs, flowers, trees and lawn grasses.

* Modern office procedures including use of various computer programs and keyboard.

Skill in:

* Operation of landscape maintenance equipment.

* Public contact.

Ability to:

* Identify landscape problem.

* Use the hand and power tools required in general grounds maintenance work.

* Feed and care for trees by spraying and injecting chemicals.

* Assist in the training of less experienced personnel.

* Perform semi-skilled landscape maintenance work including tree trimming.

* Perform heavy manual labor.

* Interpret, apply, and explain City, State, and departmental policies, laws, codes, and regulations.

* Effectively communicate with contractors, staff, and public in written and oral form.

* Monitor water management systems and provide information to supervisor.

* Read and interpret plans.

* Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records; perform recordkeeping duties.

* Work independently.

* Develop and maintain effective working relationships.

* Understand and follow oral and written directions.

* Follow safe work practices, including workplace safety policies and procedures.


Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skill and ability is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skill and abilities would be:

* One (1) year of landscape or ground maintenance experience.


* Possession of or ability to obtain a Class C, California Driver's License, by time of appointment.

* Possession of a Qualified Pesticide Applicators Certificate is desirable.

Additional Information:PHYSICAL STANDARDS:

Positions in this class require moderate to heavy physical work with prolonged standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, lifting and carrying loads weighing between 50 to 95 pounds. Positions may also involve field work, resulting in exposure to the weather.
