BASIC FUNCTION:# The Mental Health Technician assists with the care planning process, performs limited medical and psychiatric patient care, provides transport, and supervises patients while at activities, meetings, diagnostic testing and related activities as directed by the professional nurse/manager. SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:# None NATURE AND SCOPE:# This position interacts with nursing staff, patients and families, and other BHC staff. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:# Supports the mission, vision and values of the hospital. Responsible for working in a safe and protective manner at all times, keeping in mind that safety and environmental hazards are the responsibility of all employees for themselves, other staff members and patients. Performs limited direct nursing care to psychiatric mental health patients. Demonstrates knowledge and support of nursing unit and hospital standards, policies and procedures. Provides primary supervision to patients, under the direction of the RN/manager, to ensure safety, behavioral redirection, and teaching of adaptive coping skills. Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment in behavioral crisis situations under the direction of the RN/manager. Assists in the data collection, development, implementation and evaluation of the patient treatment plan under the supervision of the RN/manager. Participates in maintaining a therapeutic environment when supervising patient activities such as group education, activity therapy, recreational sports, meals, visitation and patient courtyard breaks, etc. Provides psychoeducational and therapeutic activity groups and facilitates group discussion. Listens to nursing report or gets direct report from RN and obtains assignment from the shift leader, clarifying the assignment as needed. Introduces self to assigned patients, determines their needs and reviews their schedule of activities, and responsibilities with them in accordance with the treatment plan. Notifies RN/manager of changes in the patient#s condition in a timely manner, records in the chart, and documents necessary information on the inter-shift report forms. Documents patient#s mental and physical status in the assessment flow sheet. Orients new patients to the unit service area including introduction to the patient#s room and lounges, providing patient handbook, program schedule and introduction to staff and other patients. Assists patients with personal hygiene, belongings, and linen changes based on self-care needs. Supervises the dining room experience including, providing snacks, assisting patients to the dining room, assisting with special diets, trays, or feeding, following dining room procedure. Obtains vital signs and weights on all patients according to procedure. Assists with the admission, transfer, and discharge process as directed. Performs crisis intervention when responding to inquiry calls appropriately per assessment and referral guidelines. Collects urine and other specimens as ordered. Transports and supervise patients in activities, meetings, diagnostic appointments, court, and other activities outside the facility. Provides special patient precautions (i.e., 1:1, 15 minute checks) in accordance with unit standards and physician orders when directed by RN/manager. Maintains safety of the therapeutic milieu by conducting room checks, patient observations and monitoring patient#s behavior in the milieu. Spends time with assigned patients daily, reviewing their treatment plan, determining progress towards goals and assisting them in attaining their goals. Documents patient#s progress toward goals in the assessment flow sheet. Provides input to the treatment team regarding formulation and revision of treatment plans. Provides psychoeducational groups, therapeutic activity groups and discussion groups to assigned patient population. Conducts community meetings and goals planning meetings.# Assists the patients in formulating daily goals consistent with their treatment plan. Prioritizes tasks/unit needs with direction of RN/manager. Attends, supervises and interacts with patient during therapeutic activities as directed. Maintains confidentiality in all matters pertaining to patients, families and significant others. Demonstrates sensitivity to multi-cultural and spiritual issues. Completes appropriate sections of the Patient Skin Assessment and inventory of patient belongings as directed by RN and seeks validation from an RN. Prioritizes patient needs from basic to higher functioning (i.e., physiological, safety, security, love and belonging, self-esteem and self-actualization). Accepts assignment to other patient population as directed by RN/manager. Demonstrates knowledge of structure standards/protocols/procedures and master treatment plans. Attends unit/service area staff meetings. Uses hospital criteria to report suspected abuse or neglect. Attends in-services, is compliant with essential education and competencies without prompting from the RN/manager. Reports to shift leader when entering or leaving the workspace providing continuity of patient care. Provides and documents care consistent with the individualized patient treatment plan. Demonstrates consistent use of CPI and verbal de-escalation techniques during a behavioral crisis and maintains safety of milieu by adhering to the safety standards. Follows department standards for use of behavior management techniques, including application of restraints. Participates in Code Gray review meetings. Repeats information as needed for elderly patients. States normal developmental behaviors for pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients. Observes and identifies developmentally abnormal behaviors. Communicates developmentally abnormal findings to RN in a timely manner. Meets physical needs relevant to pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients. Maintains a safe environment, following established unit standards and by removing safety hazard. Facilitates naps/rest period for pediatric and elderly patients. Modifies bathing techniques to protect fragile skin. States normal vital signs for age group and promptly reports abnormal measurements. Ensures patient has glasses and/or hearing aids if needed. Teaches, encourages and allows child to complete tasks independently (as developmentally able); reinforces child#s efforts. Language used is appropriate to the child#s developmental level (e.g., concrete behavioral descriptions rather than abstract concepts). Respects the adolescent#s need for privacy by keeping door closed if requested, knocking before entering, not disturbing personal items, as clinically appropriate. Responds appropriately to adolescent mood swings, is non-judgmental while providing feedback and setting reasonable limits. Treats the elderly with dignity and respects their rights and wishes. Measures and records intake and output. Gives and removes bedpans and urinals, describes contents and records. Assists patients in and out of bed and to wheelchairs and stretchers. Assists patients to ambulate. Assists with physical examinations. Maintains fall prevention measures as indicated by protocol. Uses, maintains and cleans special equipment in specific areas. Answers call bells within an appropriate time. CORE COMPETENCIES:# Flexibility and commitment to meet the staffing needs of the hospital on any of the three shifts. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. No evidence of existing mental illness. Current BLS Certification required from American Heart Association or American Red Cross. CPI Certification and basic water safety course within the first three months of employment. Must be able to participate in both indoor and outdoor recreational activities with patients (i.e., volleyball, basketball, walking, and swimming activities). Must be in good physical condition with no restrictions of movement. Must be able to apply Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) Techniques without limitations. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:# High School Diploma or have obtained a GED certificate.
