The City of Vacaville is currently recruiting to fill vacancies for Recreation Specialist I's in youth services, gymnastics, concessions, adult and youth sports within the Parks & Recreation Department. Effective 1/1/2020 the new salary schedule for Recreation Specialist I is $13.00 - $15.05/hr
The Recreation Specialist I works within the Parks and Recreation Department in a variety of recreation roles within a number of different program areas.
Typical duties include, but are not limited to:
- Assisting with planning, coaching and leading program activities as needed;
- Interacting and leading participants in arts, crafts, games, and sports;
- Overseeing and/or monitoring facilities, programs and participants;
- Officiating and score keeping;
- Checking in participants;
- Chaperoning participants on field trips;
- Answering questions and handling complaints from participants and the general public;
- Interacting with the general public and vendors participating in recreation and community activities;
- Providing reception, customer service, recordkeeping, housekeeping and cash handling duties;
- Providing site facilitation, maintenance, and upkeep;
- Opening and closing facilities;
- Assisting with set-up and take down of equipment, materials and supplies;
- Ensuring compliance with Departmental policies and safety procedures;
- Distributing and assisting with the purchase of equipment, materials, and supplies.
Recreation Specialists may work in a variety of program areas depending on departmental need.
Duties may include, depending on program assignment(s): assisting with planning and leading program activities as needed; interacting, leading, and supervising youth in arts, crafts, games and sports; performing participant check-in, reception duties and cash handling duties; assisting with equipment set-up, take down and housekeeping; chaperoning participants on field trips, opening and closing facilities.
Duties may include, depending on program assignment(s): program facilitation, coaching, equipment management; assisting with planning, coaching and leading program activities as needed; interacting, leading, and supervising youth in programs, recreation classes, competitive programs, special events, camps, clinics and birthday parties.
Duties may include: taking orders for food or beverage, presenting prices and packaging options, processing payments, operating food preparation equipment, and maintaining a clean, safe and sanitized work space.
Adult and Youth Sports
Duties may include, depending on program assignment(s): site facilitation, coaching, officiating, score keeping, field prep* and/or equipment management for various sports such as softball, volleyball, tennis, t-ball, skateboarding, flag football and basketball; assisting with planning, coaching and leading program activities as needed; interacting with youth and participating in arts, crafts, games and sports; performing participant check-in, reception duties and cash handling duties; chaperoning participants on field trips; opening and closing facilities.
- In order to perform Field Prep duties, successful completion of a physical exam is required.

Part-time positions are paid an hourly rate and can work up to a maximum of 129 hours per month. Some positions may require working irregular hours including nights, weekends and holidays.Part-time positions are at-will, are not eligible for health or retirement benefits, and do not accrue leave time with the exception of state mandated sick leave (24 hours per year).
Education: None required.
Experience: None required. Some related work experience is desirable, such as working in a recreation or sports environment with the public of any age, working with youth, or providing customer service and cash handling.
License or Certificate: Select positions may require the possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment. Must be at least 18 years of age if required to drive vehicles for City business.
Select positions may require the ability to obtain CPR & First Aid Certificates within 30 days of hire.

The Selection Process
All applications will be reviewed for minimum qualifications and only the best qualified will be invited to continue in the examination process. The examination process may consist of an oral interview and/or a practical skills test. The process will evaluate the following areas (depending on actual position or work area):
Knowledge of: Principles and practices of customer service; principles and practices of workplace safety; common cleaning equipment and products; basic mathematics; English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; telephone etiquette; basic office methods and procedures; basic computers and office machines.
Ability to: Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; relate well with members of the public including youth and their parents; demonstrate professional customer service and conflict resolution skills; understand and follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; use sound judgment; lead and teach participants with minimal supervision; demonstrate leadership skills, responsibility, reliability, enthusiasm, and creativity; work in a busy environment; handle money accurately; maintain appropriate records; perform simple mathematical calculations; perform physical tasks associated with the job; work with little direct supervision once tasks are learned; exercise initiative and take independent action; understand age-appropriate behavior and discipline; and perform routine clerical work.
Applicants receiving a conditional offer of employment must provide a valid TB certificate and successfully complete the pre-placement process for this position before a final offer will be extended. Pre-placement assessments for this position include a Livescan (FBI/DOJ fingerprint review) and drug screen. Some work areas may also requires a DMV record review and/or medical exam.
