The Information and Embedded Systems Department within the Undersea Systems Office (USO) of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer. Responsibilities include: assisting with the development of software/firmware that is tightly interfaced to hardware in an embedded system; debug and test software/firmware using unit integration and hardware-in-the-loop system tests; document algorithms; write specifications; proactively seek professional development opportunities; assist with demonstrations and presentations to peers, management, sponsors, and stakeholders; provide support to other members of the team as needed. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline (Professional Engineer license accepted in lieu of Bachelor's degree) or higher, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or Computer Science is preferred. Preferred experience includes: real-time and multi-threaded applications; strong self-management and time management skills, strong communications skills and a willingness to learn. Experience required for this position is: specific domain knowledge in C/C++, MATLAB, LabVIEW, VHDL or Verilog. Strong communication skills, including technical writing are also required.
