Emergency Services Technician

Providence is calling a Emergency Services Technician (Full time/Night Shift) to Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance in Torrance, CA.

We are seeking a Emergency Services Technician which is a non-licensed health care employee who will perform delegated routine and predictable patient care tasks/duties and works under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). These duties may include, but are not limited to ECGs, vital signs, monitoring, basic patient care and transportation. Respond appropriately to patients and families with knowledge of age-specific needs based on the emergency department scope of service.

In this position you will:

  • Verify 2 patient identifiers prior to any patient procedure or activity
  • Provide direct patient care tasks/duties that have been delegated by the RN
  • Perform vital signs and records
  • Change simple dressings (non-sterile)
  • Perform/record finger stick blood sugars
  • Assist with patient restraints according to established policy
  • Assist with Artic Sun and Bair Hugger
  • Clean and dress superficial wounds and sutured lacerations
  • Apply simple burn dressings
  • Perform 12 lead EKGs
  • Care for/labels/stores patient personal property
  • Empty and change drainage containers, reports and records contents
  • Perform tray/supply set-up for a bedside procedure
  • Provide post mortem care
  • Apply orthopedic splints as directed. Document neuro-circulation status after application and notifies RN
  • Measure and adjust crutches (crutch instruction to be given by RN)
  • Perform visual acuity
  • Eye irrigation if warranted
  • Stock patient care areas with appropriate supplies at the beginning of each shift and on an ongoing basis
  • Perform transportation of patients, lifting support, as assigned
  • Make routine rounds throughout the work area. Collects linens, trash, trays, and other equipment and places in designated areas
  • Recognize emergency situations; promptly reacts; initiate or support CPR; follow directions appropriately in emergency situations; report observations
  • Recognize and report safety hazards and defective equipment
  • Triage duties:
  • Inform patients and family re: triage process
  • Inform triage RN regarding changes in patients condition
  • Assist patients out of vehicles
  • Provide safe patient hand-off to triage nurse and next triage tech
  • Documentation/Information Management:
  • Responsible for accurate and concise documentation in Electronic Health Record
  • Leadership/Supervision: Assist with the orientation and on-the-job training of new hires
  • Performance Improvement/Quality and Safety:
  • Participates in and can articulate department and hospital performance improvement projects
  • Actively support the facility with regards to continuous compliance with all regulatory and performance improvement standards including, but not limited to the Joint Commission, Department of Health Services, CMS Core Measures, IHI initiatives, and HCAHPS
  • Maintain current knowledge regarding Joint Commission standards for this position
  • Commit to and actively participates in ongoing compliance
  • Provide the best care and service to every person, every time
  • Provide care that is safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable and patient/family centere
  • Budget Responsibilities:
  • Responsible to use equipment and supplies in a prudent and efficient manner
  • Identify opportunities for cost containment
  • Support emergency staffing needs
  • Complete job duties within assigned shift with overtime approved by management/charge nurse

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Certification as an EMT or completion of an accredited EMT course or Demonstrated equivalency (such as experience as a Corpsman or MD)
  • Requires valid American Heart Associationâs Basic Life Support

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Basic EKG course
  • 1 year EMT experience
  • 1 year Emergency Department experience
