ADAPTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHERDefinitionThe job of Adaptive Physical Education Teacher is done for the purpose/s of developing and implementing an instructional program in Adapted Physical Education for students with exceptional needs; developing special education students; success in academics, interpersonal skills and areas of travel, concept development and personal management to increase their independence by implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities, outcomes; addressing students' specific needs; providing a safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.Examples of Duties:Plans, develops, and implements an Adapted Physical Education program for exceptional students placed in Adapted Physical Education program; assesses physical motor needs of students and plans appropriate instructional program; may instruct students in knowledge and skills in physical fitness and individual, dual, and team sports; may analyze, demonstrate, and explain skills, knowledge, and strategies of sports, games, and fundamentals of body movement; provides reinforcement training in good health and safety habits; neuro-muscular and coordination skills; evaluates each student's gross motor progress based upon assessed potential in physical fitness and physical growth; establishes and maintains effective communication with parents and other teacher and support staff; prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports; provides training and serves as a resource on Adapted Physical Education to other teachers as required.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSResponsibilities include working under standardized instructions and/or routines; providing information and/or advising other persons; operating within a defined budget and/or financial guidelines. Utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. Opportunity to impact the organization's services. The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions requires the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 45% walking and 45% standing. Applicants applying for California credential certification must show verification of successful passing of the California Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST) or equivalent.Possession of or ability to obtain, prior to employment, a valid California Driver's License is required.
