You will serve as a Physical Scientist/Oceanographer/Geophysicist in the Special Projects Cell, Special Programs and Production Support Department of the Naval Oceanographic Office of NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS.

Responsibilities

* Utilizes industry standard Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to analyze and display environmental data according to assigned tasks.

* Refers unusual problems encountered together with recommended course of action to senior personnel.

* Participates in at-sea multi-discipline oceanographic surveys and assists senior personnel in accomplishment of survey objectives.

* Sets and accomplishes training goals agreed to in consultation with the branch supervisor including completion of mandatory annual training.

This is a developmental position. Target level is GS-11 Assignments at the lower level will be performed under closer supervisor and become progressively more difficult until full performance level is reached.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

* Performs with general guidance techniques involved in processing oceanographic, bathymetric, and/or geophysical data to produce required outputs.

* Performs with general guidance techniques involved in compiling and integrating oceanographic, bathymetric and/or geophysical data into final products.

* Assists senior personnel in conducting open source and internal searches to obtain pertinent information to fulfill branch requirements.

* Uses various specialized software tools used to develop final products.

Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess:

Basic Requirements for Physical Scientist (1301): All applicants must meet the basic requirements and specialized experience to qualify for this position.

A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR

B. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Basic Requirements for Geophysicist (1313):

A. Degree: that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.) OR

B. Combination of education and experience - courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Basic Requirements for Oceanographer (1360):

A. Degree: major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences. OR

B. Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR GS-07: Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position: One year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement in an accredited college or university that is directly related to the work of the position.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be combined to meet the total qualification requirements.
