As a Computer Scientist, you will be responsible for the planning, development, and operations of Information Technology (IT) systems and services provisioned by the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO). You will also manage projects and provide technical expertise to upgrade existing IT services or to provision new IT services to our customers.

Responsibilities

Consults with management and planning personnel in preparing requirements and criteria for complex or high value systems projects. Participates in strategic planning by providing recommendations on direction and focus of Information Technology (IT) services in support of Agency and Center missions.

Develops or directs the development of IT applications. Provides technical oversight for IT services including, but not limited to, design and development of software applications, hosting of applications in the Stennis Data Center, and configuration control.

Manages special projects that have a significant impact on the delivery of customer support services. Performs or provides oversight of all phases of project management including planning, scheduling, resource management, requirements development, design, development, testing, and operations.

Provides technical expertise for provisioning of IT services to the Agency. Explores ways to upgrade or enhance the level of services provided. Implements changes in response to changes in customer requirements. Resolves issues related to the delivery of services.

Provides required surveillance and reporting of performance metrics for Center and Agency IT contracts.

Represents the OCIO for applicable working groups and teams at both the Center and Agency level as required.

Qualifications

Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience in all phases of project management; application development and interfacing with data center services for deployment and hosting of applications; and strategic planning of IT services including identification of long-range goals, justification, and methodology of achieving the goals.

Education

Basic Education Requirement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science*, Earth and Planetary Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, Meteorology, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Oceanography, Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Space Science, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering or other appropriate physical science or engineering field. Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position. *Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.
