Emergency Psychiatric Triage Counselor

Providence is calling an Emergency Psychiatric Triage (Psychiatric Unit Triage, Evening Shift, 0.7 FTE) to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Washington.   • Accept referrals for medically non-urgent patients presenting with acute psychiatric symptoms or an apparent mental disorder
  • Utilizing communication, information gathering skills and medical records synthesizes data from patient, family and friends, law enforcement and others to provide a comprehensive psychosocial intake
  • Provide an assessment of patientâs imminent risk for harm to self or others and/or inability to perform ADLs (gravely disabled) due to acute psychiatric symptoms and complaints
  • Document psychosocial evaluation and risk assessment in patientâs medical record prior to discharge
  • Utilize the Med Host system to communicate work processes to the ED staff
  • Provide a recommended disposition to the referring Emergency physician for the least restrictive level of care that will provide for the patientâs safety and recovery
  • Maintain current knowledge of community resources, contacts and criteria
  • Make referrals to community resources as needed and documents rationale
  • Refer to Designated Mental Health Professionals (DMP) when involuntary detention is indicated
  • Obtain and document the initial authorization for Medicaid and Medicaid eligible admissions prior to transfer to the unit
  • Work cooperatively/collaboratively with the Admission Coordinator and unit charge nurse in placement/admission of patients on inpatient units
  • Attend 80% of mandatory staff meetings relevant to the psychiatric triage service
  • Coordinate the equitable assignment of new admissions to the psychiatric hospitalists utilizing the bed census spreadsheet. Promote continuity of care for readmissions
  • Activate the on-call staff resource when there are four (4) adult patients or (3) adolescent/child referrals from the ED physician for psychiatric triage evaluation

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Agency Affiliated Counselor credential: Applicants who apply for an Agency Affiliated Counselor credential through the Department of Health within seven days of employment can provide services within the agency for up to 60 days while the department processes their application. Applicants must stop working on the 60th day of employment if the credential has not been issued. During this time, applicants may not provide unsupervised counseling until the department of their employer has completed a criminal background check. Unsupervised means the supervisor is not physically present at the location where the counseling occurs. - OR
  • Possess a valid and unencumbered Washington State License/Registration for one of the following: Certified Counselor, Mental Health Counselor, Licensed Advance Social Worker or Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker
  • Acceptable references from former employer(s)
  • 1 year Psychiatric experience

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Psychology or related Human Services OR Education requirement may be waived in the case of an applicant demonstrating exceptional relevant clinical experience
