Use data science, operations research, GIS (geographic information systems), advanced mathematical and statistical models, simulations, quantitative genetics, and strong business acumen to deliver insights, recommendations, and solutions for Seeds Product Development science and business problems. Analyze complex data sets and formulate and apply mathematical models and other optimization approaches to generate and interpret information that assists management with decision making, policy formulation, and other managerial functions. Efficiently process and analyze large data sets. Apply novel and routine methods to meet team deliverables that include operational improvement, breeding process optimization, quantitative genetics insights and improved decision making within our development pipeline. Develop and interpret information that assists management with decision making and policy formulation. Network and collaboratively work with Seeds R&D to identify opportunities, conduct work and communicating analytical results to develop enhancements to our operations, share key learnings and implement new processes or analytics. Play a role in defining, designing, experimenting and evaluating models. Create prototypes to address challenges and enhance fundamental decision-making. Process large data sets. Evaluate and validate algorithm performance, monitor and re-train as needed. Serve as an internal and external Subject Matter Expert (SME) for operations research and engineering techniques, GIS, advanced modeling and data analysis methodologies as it relates to enhancing the Seeds Product Development pipeline and decision-making. Contribute to the development of technical training offerings and curricula in support of effective implementation of quantitative methods. Maintain expertise in the proper application and use of computational tools for the management of germplasm materials, breeding processes (including trait introgression), data management and analysis, and reporting, for activities of Seeds Product Development. Serve as a “power user” subject matter expert for the ongoing development and optimization of computational applications used by Seeds Product Development. Communicate opportunities for improvement of computational applications to the development or maintenance teams, based on personal use or user feedback. Supervise 1-2 Data Science interns per year and or lead projects/initiatives. Travel required 2-3 weeks per year (domestic and international).

This position requires a PhD or equivalent in Operations Research, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, Data Science, Mathematics or related field. In the alternate, employer will accept a Master’s degree or equivalent in Operations Research, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, Data Science, Mathematics or related field and 2 years of related experience.

Must also have experience with each of the following: 1) Practical experience building predictive and optimization models to improve processes, operations and decision making; 2) Utilizing operations research practices and mathematical models to solve challenging problems; 3) Understanding of basic planting breeding methodologies and applications, quantitative genetics and genetics by environment interactions; 4) Theoretical and practical experience on operations research, optimization and simulations; and, 5) Theoretical and practical experience of statistical modeling, data mining, machine learning, deep learning.

Will accept experience gained before, during or after Master’s program. All experience may be gained concurrently. Candidates must pass a background check and drug test before beginning employment. Full-time, position located in Slater, IA. Please apply online.
