Position Description

The City of Signal Hill has unexpired vacancies for two (2) Civil Service Commissioners and one (1) Parks and Recreation Commissioner. New commissioner appointees will serve until May 31, 2021, to complete the remaining three years of the current four-year term.

The recruitment will close on Friday, June 1, 2018, at 4:30 p.m.

This is a part-time essential volunteer position with the City. The commissioners receive a stipend per meeting in recognition of their service.

Commission interviews and appointments will be conducted at the regular meeting of the Signal Hill City Council on Tuesday, June 12, 2018, @ 7:00 p.m. Example of Duties

Civil Service Commission

The Commission's primary responsibility is to approve eligibility lists of those determined to be qualified for the classified service in the City and to hear appeals of classified employees involving suspensions, demotions, or dismissals. Compensation is $65 per meeting.

The Commission meets the first Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. to address Commission business.

Parks & Recreation Commission

The Parks and Recreation Commission acts in an advisory capacity to the City Council and the Administrative Officer. The Commission interprets the leisure-time needs, facilities, and services of the citizens of Signal Hill and recommends general policies concerning all parks and recreation properties, facilities, plans, programs, and activities. It evaluates suggestions, criticisms, and comments in light of such policies. It recommends long-range programs for the improvements, acquisition, and development of parks and recreation facilities and for the extension of services. The Commission shall perform such additional duties as may be designated by the City Council by ordinance or resolution. Compensation is $65 per meeting.

The Commission meets the third Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. to address Commission business.

Minimum Qualifications

To serve as a Commissioner, you must be a U.S. citizen, 18 years of age or older; and a registered voter and resident of the City of Signal Hill at least 29 days prior to the date of appointment. Commission members shall continue to reside in the City for the duration of the term of office (Signal Hill City Charter Section 602).
