Research Associate II - Electrophysiology

The Allen Institute for Brain Science is currently engaged in a ten-year plan to derive new knowledge about mammalian brain structure and function. By implementing a Team Science approach on a large scale, we strive to generate useful public resources, drive technological innovations, and discover fundamental brain properties through integration of experiments, modeling and theory.

The Cell Types Program aims to deliver a comprehensive and multimodal classification of the cell types and circuits of the mouse and human neocortex. The Research Associate II will join a larger team to generate high-quality patch clamp electrophysiology data from mouse and human brain slices. Additionally, he or she will conduct pilot experiments, troubleshoot and assist others to maximize the efficiency and quality of data collection. The successful candidate will be a hard worker with attention to detail, willingness to lead smaller projects and excellent lab documentation. Significant experience in either patch clamp electrophysiology or python programming is required.

Please note: Due to unique availability of human brain tissue, flexible work hours may be required.


* Perform patch clamp experiments from mouse and human acute and cultured brain slice preparations

* Supervise and troubleshoot metadata tracking and reporting

* Work both independently and with stakeholders to develop new or improve existing methodologies and technologies

* Direct and assist other team members with experiment and equipment troubleshooting efforts

* Interface with colleagues at other laboratories

* Document work and prepare written and oral reports and/or publications with accuracy and reliability

* Train others on established procedures


* BA/BS in Neuroscience, Biology or related field

* 2-4 years relevant laboratory experience

* Familiarity with the Python programming language

* Experience in analyzing biological data

* Documentation and preparation of written and oral reports

* Detailed record keeping in the form of lab notebooks

* Excellent written and verbal communication skills


* >1+ years of patch clamp experience

* Masters degree Neuroscience, Biology or related field

* Experience leading independent laboratory projects

* Experience in an R&D/pharmaceutical industry setting or advanced training in neurobiology or laboratory automation (academic or industrial)

* Python programming experience

Work Environment

* Laboratory atmosphere exposure to chemical, biological or other potentially hazardous substances

* Working at computer for extended periods of time

* Occasional exposure to safety hazards, noises, change in temperature, climbing and/or lifting (30+lbs), chemicals and other hazardous materials, and machinery
