The Environmental Management Specialist will assist in implementation and administration of Port-Wide sustainability programs and projects with an emphasis on implementing strategies to reduce Maritime Division-related greenhouse gas emissions.


This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Identify and integrate sustainability principles into the operational functions of the Port; utilize the Port's in-house expertise, literature and conferences to develop ideas to advance the Port's sustainability efforts; evaluate these opportunities for technical feasibility, cost effectiveness, and acceptability by the Port community; create implementation plans to recommend to the administration; work with departments to roll out approved project plans; analyze effectiveness and results of projects.

Evaluate project review systems to advance sustainability in capital development and other projects. After completion of new system, the project specialist will integrate environmental sustainability into projects and initiative.

Assist in development of a comprehensive, transparent and measurable energy and greenhouse gas reduction program emphasizing creative solutions to reduce emissions related to transportation for port employees, tenants, and related maritime businesses. Elements of this program will likely include commute trip reduction, electric vehicle charging program, alternative fuel options, and fleet and bus fleet management for port related operations.

Assist in implementation and on-going management of the Maritime Solid Waste Management plan and develop targeted diversion strategies for both port and tenant waste streams. Create port-wide recycling/waste diversion policy.

Research and evaluate effective communication strategy for conveying the Century Agenda challenges and successes relative to climate protection and sustainability performance to community, commission, internal Port staff across all divisions, and tenants. Assist in implementing the strategy after approved by managers.


* Knowledge of how clean energy, renewable fuels, and advanced vehicle technologies may assist the Port in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

* Knowledge of current and emerging sustainable project and construction design standards such as Envision, LEED

* Expertise in solid waste management including waste diversion strategies, local and state regulations and a deep understanding of current trends and issues in the recycling sector with ability to evaluate carbon emissions related to waste sector.

* Analytical and basic math skills; research skills, metric skills and technical reading skills.

* Ability to work in a team environment with the skills needed to implement strategy.

* Excellent planning, organization and communication skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of Port employees, representatives of other agencies, consultants, contractors, tenants, the public and others encountered in the transportation and sustainability course of work.


Combination of education and experience demonstrative knowledge, skills and abilities equivalent to:

* Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science or a related field; and

* Two (2) years' experience in permitting or environmental management


* Master's Degree in Environmental Science, planning or policy with Envision Sustainability Professional certification; and

* Four (4) years' experience in ground transportation and/or regional transportation planning for a public agency
