Veteran Services Outreach Assistant (190018)

The Veteran Services Outreach Assistant executes communication activities with prospective and current veteran and military students to foster enrollment and engagement at JCCC; prepares and disseminates information regarding JCCC, VA and other veteran/military-related resources to veteran service organizations, the college community, and community members at-large; assists students in the Veteran & Military Resource Center; and assists with the VA enrollment certification process.


* EXECUTES OUTREACH ACTIVITIES – Communicates with prospective and current JCCC students in person, in writing, and over the phone. Assists with management of prospective and current student data and follow up activities. Assists with social media, web pages, and marketing materials. Serves as Veterans Club Co-Advisor.

Performance is acceptable when:

* Timely and accurate information is delivered to all stakeholders.

* Prospective student data is organized and complied so that it can be utilized for outreach and follow up activities.

* Social media sites, web pages, and marketing/communication materials are up-to-date, accurate, and disseminated in a timely fashion.

* Assigned projects are completed accurately and on-time.

* The confidentiality of student records and information is maintained in accordance with FERPA.

* PREPARES AND DISSEMINATES INFORMATION – Assists with creating, updating, and maintaining reports; training manuals and calendars; assists with preparing and disseminating communications to other JCCC departments and outside organizations; processes prior military credit evaluation requests.

Performance is acceptable when:

* Reports, calendars and other communications are up-to-date, accurate, and disseminated to appropriate recipients.

* Assigned communication projects are completed accurately and on-time.

* The confidentiality of student records and information is maintained in accordance with FERPA.

* ASSISTS STUDENTS IN THE VETERAN & MILITARY STUDENT RESOURCE CENTER – Performs as team member in assisting students and other visitors to the Center. Assists with supervision and training of Veteran Services Interns.

Performance is acceptable when:

* Student questions and issues are resolved in a timely manner.

* Student paperwork is completed accurately.

* Accurate information is provided to prospective and current students, as well as, other visitors.

* The confidentiality of student records and information is maintained in accordance with FERPA.

* ASSISTS WITH THE VA ENROLLMENT CERTIFICATION PROCESS – Serves as an assistant Veteran Certifying Official for VA education benefits.

Performance is acceptable when:

* VA enrollment certifications are completed accurately and timely.

* All student record databases are maintained accurately.

* Accurate GI Bill information is provided to prospective and current students.

* Assigned projects are completed accurately and on-time.

* The confidentiality of student records and information is maintained in accordance with FERPA.

The responsibilities described represent the primary responsibilities of the job. Other responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor as warranted by business needs. The incumbent is expected to do all assigned responsibilities.

Required Skills


Associate degree or equivalent experience. Good oral and written communication skills; experience with Microsoft Office programs; excellent time management skills; ability to work independently; ability to communicate effective and confidentially; and ability to work effectively as a part of the Veteran Services and Records teams. Must have a valid driver's license and meet the college insurance driving record requirements.


Work is typically performed in an office environment and requires physical abilities generally associated with an office setting. Lifting objects of up to 25 lbs. is occasionally required. Employees are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve non-routine and complex office administrative problems; use math and mathematical reasoning; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or skills; perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks; work under intensive deadlines with frequent interruptions; and interact with students, faculty and staff encountered in the course of work, some of whom may be dissatisfied or abusive individuals.
