Job summary

Book Discovery team connect millions of people to books they enjoy. Readers can quickly discover, purchase and start reading a book from a broad selection of titles, in any format. Books Discovery team is building innovative experiences to help customer discover interesting books. We are building interactive experiences to enable customers find relevant books faster, to curate books and inspire readers to discover surprising books. Projects in Books Discovery team are a mix of great customer experiences backed by personalized algorithms. We work with UX designers and engineers to design great experiences and work with scientists to connect the experiences with personalized machine learning models. We are developing brand-new discovery mechanisms to surface books to millions of customers and drive demand. We are looking for a Senior Software Development Engineer with machine learning expertise to join us in making the book discovery process more enjoyable to customers.

As a Sr. Software Engineer, you will lead designing, developing and launching highly scalable software components. You will be responsible to decompose a business problem into clear technical designs, making trade-offs on technologies, mitigate risks early and lead implementation with the help of other engineers. You will be working with both engineers and scientists to build software workflows. You will have opportunities to mentor other software engineers and also show influence on other projects in the organization. You will have lots of opportunities for new project ideas to influence the team’s technical and business strategy.

Basic Qualifications

· 5+ years of hands on software development in any modern object-oriented language : Java/C++/C# or equivalent.

· 3+ years of experience contributing to the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems.

· Strong computer science fundamentals in design, data structures, algorithm design, problem-solving, and complexity analysis.

· Solid coding practices including peer code reviews, unit testing, and a preference for agile development.

· Ability to mentor junior software engineers or software developers in all aspects of their engineering duties.

· Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Computer Science, or relevant work experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

· Experience in building large scale infrastructure for ML models, online recommendations, ranking.

· Experience working effectively with science, data processing, and software engineering teams

· Experience in Big data technologies such as Spark, SageMaker, Glue etc.

· Strong Proficiency in Java, Scala, Kotlin, Python.

· Solid coding practices including good design documentation, algorithm analysis, unit testing.

Basic Qualifications

· 2+ years of experience contributing to the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems

· 3+ years of programming experience with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C# including object-oriented design

· 4+ years of professional software development experience

· 2+ years of experience as a mentor, tech lead OR leading an engineering team

· 3+ years of hands on software development in any modern object-oriented language : Java/Ruby/C++/C# or equivalent.

· Strong computer science fundamentals in design, data structures, algorithm design, problem-solving, and complexity analysis.

· Experience with front-end web development technologies, including JavaScript, CSS, HTML, TypeScript, Node, React JS.

· Solid coding practices including peer code reviews, unit testing, and a preference for agile development.

· Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, or relevant work experience.
