The Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant (PA) assists with surgeries and procedures, manages patients in the hospital, and sees pre- and postoperative patients in the clinic.

  1. Writes appropriate admission, perioperative, postoperative, discharge and outpatient orders, including nursing care, medication orders, and diagnostic exams (e.g., laboratory, radiological).
  2. Provides pre-operative assistance to provider(s) for planned and emergent surgeries.
  3. Performs intra-operative duties, including first and second assisting, and endoscopic saphenous vein harvesting.
  4. Performs post-operative care: Writes appropriate orders including nursing care, medications, laboratory and radiological studies. Attends the patient throughout the entire hospital stay, reviewing lab and radiologic studies and making appropriate interventions in a critical care setting. Initiates treatment of post-op complications (e.g., hemorrhage, arrhythmia, pneumothorax). Advises the attending surgeon of unexpected events, providing an accurate synopsis of events related to a major change in the patient’s condition and describing corrective measures already taken. Performs daily assessment of the patient’s post-op course, writes notes in the patient’s chart, and implements indicated therapy in accordance with established team protocols.

Qualifications:

  • Certification as a Physician Assistant with prescriptive authority in the State of Washington required.
  • Ability to manage multiple activities in a busy clinical environment, and to respond appropriately in stressful situations.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills; ability to communicate effectively with providers and other VM staff, patients, and families.
  • Ability to take evening and weekend call.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three years’ experience as a Physician Assistant in the Cardiothoracic area.
  • Experience with endoscopic vein harvesting is mandatory.
  • Experience and comfort with procedures including but not limited to: central line insertion, arterial line insertion, thoracentesis, chest tube insertion, intraaortic balloon pump management.
