Assistant Program Director Vocational Nursing

  • Assists Nursing Program Director in managing the day to day operations of Vocational Nursing Program: 

  • Works with admissions to review VN program applications, rank applicants, review of transcripts that facilitate credit granting; maintains database of applicants, and assist with letters of acceptance, rejection, and any other responses.

  • Assists with Information Sessions for prospective students

  • Interviews and advises prospective nursing students.

  • Facilitates preparation, and implementation of prerequisites.

  • Ensures that all prerequisite and core materials are completed prior to start of prerequisites and each level of the program.

  • Responsible for ensuring records of immunizations, CPR, background checks, class statistics, student files are maintained.

  • Ensures that textbooks and student supplies and uniforms are provided for students by student services within the appropriate time frame.

  • Meets with students and counsels as indicated regarding remediation plans, withdrawals, documents for eligibility for readmission, personal issues, appeals, grievances.

  • Communicates and coordinates information, and schedules with appropriate departments as relates to student and faculty criteria, requirements and needs, on an on going basis.

  • Performs role of liaison in maintaining positive partnerships with clinical facilities and agencies

  • Ensures that assignments are provided to faculty to implement lectures, clinical calendars and clinical rotation matrixes in a timely manner.

  • Ensures that clinical facilities are provided with letters and information related to clinical rotations as pertains to students and assigned faculty.

  • Coordinates VN student preceptor activities when applicable

  • Ensures that visits to clinical agencies during clinical rotations are completed and reports are written within a week of the visit.

  • Provides a second opinion on clinical status of students having difficulty in clinical.

  • Ensures that student and facility evaluations are completed at the end of each level.

  • Participates in scheduling and attending grievance committee meetings.

  • Participates in development, implementation, reviews and revisions of program guideline, policies, procedures

  • Participates in orientation and mentoring of new faculty and adjuncts.

  • Assists with input and completion of evaluates and performance reports of faculty on 30, 90 and annually or as performance indicates.

Responsibilities continued

  • Schedules faculty meetings, provides agendas and completes minutes.

  • Substitutes in lecture and clinical rotations as indicated.

  • Directs students in completing paperwork for graduation, licensure, and NCLEX-PN application.

  • Assists faculty team with test banks, blue prints, proctoring of exams

  • Assists with the preparation of the VN Program annual report for Board of Nurse Examiners.

  • Assists Program Director with completion of packets for license application and graduation certificates.

  • Attends College meetings as assigned

  • Participates in College committees as assigned.

  • Completes other projects as assigned. 

  • Participate in professional development; maintain CE hours to ensure renewed licensure.

  • Bachelor Degree in nursing required; Master in Nursing or Education preferred

  • Current California License as Registered Nurse

  • Minimum of three years experience as a registered nurse:

    •  One year shall be in teaching or clinical supervision, or a combination thereof, in a state accredited or approved registered nursing or vocational or practical nursing within the last five years.

    • Or have a minimum of three years experience in nursing administration or nursing education within the last five years.

  • Strong critical thinking skill, ability to set priorities and delegate to others.

  • Proficient, strong interpersonal communication skills

  • Willingness to learn, develop, teach and support others in teaching internet courses.

  • Competent with computer applications/software.

  • Certificate of completion by an accredited School with instruction in 1. Teaching, 2. Curriculum Development, 3. Leadership/Administration.


PC workstation using Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone, copy machine, other general office equipment.  Media and teaching aids including, PowerPoint presentations overhead projector, TV/ DVD,   Nursing lab equipment.


Coordinating and balancing the needs of a diverse student population and faculty, while simultaneously supervising and managing the multiple nursing science materials, media and inventory.  Ability to adapt, direct and multi-task.  Demonstrates exemplary nursing skills and organizational proficiency.
