Attire - The Society has a very conservative grooming policy. Tattoos may not be visible or must be appropriately covered while on duty. Jewelry may be worn if it does not detract from a well-groomed look or create a safety hazard. No facial or tongue piercing.

Requirements include:

The Sign Maker will work under general supervision and perform a variety of moderately difficult work in the design, layout and production of signs and graphics for the Zoo and Safari Park. Will perform related work as required. This position will require prior training or education in Photo Shop, Adobe Illustrator, sign layout, fabrication, PC experience and installation. Experience with Corel Draw, InDesign and CNC table router is highly desirable. Applicants must have strong organizational skills, excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with all departments at the Zoo and Safari Park. Must possess excellent customer service skills. A good driving record and valid driver license is required. Applicants must be available any of the seven days of the week. Scheduled work hours will be approximately 40 per week.

PRIMARY PURPOSE

The Sign Maker performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects San Diego Zoo Global's mission and vision of saving species worldwide by uniting our expertise in animal care and conservation science with our dedication to inspiring passion for nature and leading the fight against extinction. The Sign Maker under general supervision performs a variety of moderately difficult work in the design, layout and production of signs and graphics for the Zoo and Safari Park. This position reports to Lead Sign Maker or Manager.

This class performs a variety of skilled, journey level tasks in the design, fabrication and production of signs and graphic.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

* Receives requests for signs and graphics

* Designs and produces the product

* Prepares signs and graphics for installation

* Orders material and supplies

* Maintains records

* Services and maintains tools and equipment

* Troubleshoots machinery and software

* Engages in the organization's mission and vision

* Adheres to all organization and department policies and practices

* Practices the GRRREAT Customer Service Standards

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

* Receives requests for signs and graphics from all Organization departments and determines product to be used

* Designs and produces the product using various computer graphics equipment

* Operate table saws, drills, grinders, engraving machines, pc computers, digital printers, graphic plotters, and other equipment associated with sign and graphic shop operations

* Prepares signs and graphics for installation such as rounding corners, drilling holes, and mounting in frames

* Routinely works with computers and machinery necessary to perform the tasks in creating signs and graphics

* Occasionally assists with the installation of signs

* Troubleshoots machinery and software used in sign making

ANCILLARY FUNCTIONS

Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, training and/or experience which would clearly demonstrate the essential functions, knowledge and skills listed; may require valid California driver license.

Knowledge of:

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Sign shop environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Occasionally move moderate to heavy objects up to 45 pounds; standing, bending and frequent movement of hands.

NEW HIRES ARE SUBJECT TO PASSING A DRUG SCREEN.

SOME EMPLOYMENT IS CONTINGENT UPON PASSING PRE-PLACEMENT TESTING.

Job Requirements:

Under general supervision, performs a variety of moderately difficult work in the design, layout and engraving of signs for the Zoo and Wild Animal Park; performs related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

This class performs a variety of skilled, journey level tasks in the fabrication and engraving of signs. All signs made in-house by sign shop are engraved on plastic.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Receives requests for signs from all Society departments and determines color of plastic to be used; designs sign layout or layout signs following design requests; cuts plastic to proper size; sets type and operates engraving pantograph to engrave messages; prepares signs for installation such as rounding corners, drilling holes, and mounting in frames; orders material and supplies; keeps records; services and maintains tools and equipment; occasionally assists with the installation of signs.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

* English grammar and spelling

* Safety practices in operating hand tools and cutting and engraving equipment

Skills to:

* Competently perform the duties and responsibilities outlined in the Representative Duties section

* Learn the proper and safe operation of tools and equipment used in preparing and engraving plastic signs

* Keep simple records

* Operate table saws, drills, grinders and engraving machine

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Ability to operate signmaking equipment and occasionally move moderate to heavy objects.

All employment is contingent upon passing a drug screen.

Some employment is contingent upon passing a pre-placement physical.
