ASL Language Mentor

The ASL Language Mentor will work under the direction of the VRSII faculty to support participants in the Pathways Internship Program (PIP), School-to-Work (STW), and/or COMPASS. In this role, the ASL Language Mentor will support interpreting interns and students in developing the necessary ASL skills to provide effective interpreting. This dynamic position includes provision of skill-building activities and mentorship as well as supporting parallel progress in interpreter skill set development, working in collaboration with the VRSII team and the PIP, STW, and COMPASS Coordinators, and supporting various learning activities such as mock calls and mock interpreting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

* Work on an assigned team with a specialized focus: ASL Language Mentoring

* Collaborative work with the VRSII, PIP, STW, and COMPASS teams; supporting effective communication among team members through progress notes and videos.

* Flexibility to work with various training plans, utilizing different approaches for different learning styles.

* Other duties as assigned

* Support other VRSII programs as needed.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required

* Ability to communicate fluently in American Sign Language and written English

* Ability to present in American Sign Language

* Ability to manage many ongoing projects simultaneously

* Flexible work schedule

* Light travel schedule when needed

* Preferred 5+ years' experience mentoring, teaching ASL, providing workshop trainings, interpreting and/or teaching interpreters

* Working knowledge and experience working with Excel, MS Word, Power Point and with other computer-based systems

* Ability to work in a fast paced, dynamic corporate setting

* Ability to create and provide written reports and communication

* Experience with diagnostic assessment of interpreter skill set strongly preferred

* Ability to learn and work with eLearning applications and software strongly preferred


* American Sign Language Teacher's Association certification strongly preferred

* Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) strongly preferred

* Bachelor's degree strongly preferred
