Primary Function:

Provide for the care, examination, evaluation, and treatment of animals in accordance with established policies of the Animal Humane Society under direction of veterinarians.

Schedule: This is a seasonal position ranging anywhere from 24-40 hours/week. It will likely require some longer shifts on weekends as well as some weekday shifts.

Essential Responsibilities:

* Perform daily treatments, administer medication, and monitor shelter animals in accordance with shelter policy.

* Complete medical procedures and assist veterinarians in surgical procedures following established protocols.

* Evaluate incoming animals for possible placement, including physical exams and behavior evaluations.

* Provide customer counseling on results of the evaluation process, which could include providing additional re-homing resources or humane euthanasia for animals not viable for adoption.

* Accurate entry of animal-related data into computer system.

* Process fostered animal returns and release.

* Greet customers as they arrive for scheduled appointments.

* Schedule walk-in customers for stray animal or emergency appointments.

* Ensure appointments are completed in a timely manner.

* Collect appropriate fees and donations from customers.

* Open and close receiving center, including preparing daily reports and balancing of cash drawers.

* Humanely euthanize animals which are not viable for adoption or upon request of owner.

* Work collaboratively with all other staff in the animal services and other organizational departments to ensure animals are being cared for properly and moving through the system efficiently.

* Work with AHS volunteers in a positive and effective way to facilitate meaningful volunteer engagement.

* Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Required:

* Experience as a veterinary assistant or technician, veterinary technician certification or related schooling

* Must be able to communicate with public in an engaging and educational manner

* Capable of working independently and successfully multi-tasking

* Strong verbal and written communication skills

* Strong organizational and interpersonal skills

* Available to work a flexible schedule that may include nights, weekends, and occasional holidays.

* Must be able to handle the physical and emotional aspect of work in an animal shelter environment, including the use of euthanasia

* Willingness to travel to other Animal Humane Society sites as assigned to meet staffing needs

Work Environment:

* Animal areas may be humid, noisy, and odorous

* Exposure to pests such as fleas and ticks

* Possibility of being bitten or scratched.

* When outside, employees may be exposed to extreme weather conditions including but not limited to cold, heat, rain, and snow.
