JOB TITLE: Senior Privacy Counsel


At Thomson Reuters, Privacy matters. This is a key leadership position responsible for leading and managing the privacy agenda globally. This involves responsibility for for Thomson Reuters global data protection governance framework as well as overseeing and directing all ongoing activities related to the development, implementation, maintenance of, and adherence to Thomson Reuters policies and procedures covering data privacy in compliance with relevant laws globally s. The role holder is expected to influence, collaborate and engage with senior management both to provide strategic input on privacy and to report on compliance and represent the company with regulators, policy makers and the wider Data Privacy community. The role manages a small globally focused team.


* Manage the day-to-day implementation of Thomson Reuters Global Privacy Guidelines and provide development guidance and assist in the identification, implementation, and maintenance of other information privacy policies, procedures and guidance where required to support the implementation of the Global Privacy Guidelines.

* Manage existing processes and help create new processes reflecting evolving legal requirements related to the collection and use of personal information, data subject complaints, data subject access requests, and personal data transfers.

* Perform information privacy risk assessments and conduct related ongoing compliance monitoring activities in coordination with Thomson Reuters' other compliance and operational assessment functions.

* Participate in the development, implementation, and ongoing compliance monitoring of trading partner and business associate agreements, to ensure privacy concerns, requirements, and responsibilities are addressed.

* Initiate, facilitate and promote activities to foster information privacy awareness within the organization and to business associates, and other appropriate third parties.

* Provide practical expert advice on privacy issues related to complex business matters and key commercial contracts.

* Lead or direct various workstreams for privacy compliance globally.

* Maintain management information and report on data privacy incidents and complaints.

* Initiate, facilitate and promote activities to foster education and aware on privacy and data protection obligations and responsibilities throughout Thomson Reuters.

* Partner and collaborate with Enterprise Operations and Technology, Businesses and Legal colleagues to deliver privacy throughout the organisation.

* Keep abreast of developments in data privacy legislation and prepare communications for the business on key issues which may have an impact upon Thomson Reuters.

* Ability to manage multiple priorities with tight deadlines and thrives in a fast-paced environment.

* Effective manager with ability to develop and lead a collaborative global team.


Law Degree required. Minimum of 10 years experience or equivalent in dealing with data privacy legal and compliance issues in a commercial environment.

Relevant qualifications such as CIPP/US, CIPP/EU, CIPM certifications desireable.

Must be well-versed in and able to provide practical advice on matters involving European, US and APAC laws; wider knowledge of global data privacy laws is also highly desirable.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills including demonstrable experience of advising executive level business partners and delivering face-to-face and webinar-based training

Proven experience of developing trusted relationships with business and functional stakeholder and influencing and negotiating across a matrix organization

The ability to work in a complex and developing environment with multiple priorities

Adaptability and ability to devise pragmatic solutions

Experience of leading and managing a small team of professionals.

Location: USA with willingness to travel periodically domestically and internationally to the UK and other jurisdictions.
