Note: Two (2) positions will be filled with this announcement.

This position operates equipment and provides the labor for maintaining the grounds, parking areas and roads of the Minnesota Zoo campus. This position requires the incumbent to work weekends, night, or holidays as assigned, and be available for call-in/call-back assignments both before and after normal shift hours including weekends. For call-in/call-back assignments, the incumbent must respond within 30 minutes by phone and be onsite within one (1) hour and 30 minutes.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

* Maintain assigned grounds so that grounds, walkways and roadways are free of trash and debris and maintained to Minnesota Zoo standards.

* Remove snow from assigned sites so that all roadways, parking lots, and walkways are in safe walking and driving condition for Zoo guests and staff.

* Maintain assigned Minnesota Zoo roads, parking lots and walkways seasonally so that all are in good repair and in safe walking and driving conditions throughout the campus.

* Provide assistance to horticulture, maintenance shops, and other Minnesota Zoo personnel so that special projects and/or work assignments are accomplished within stated deadlines and required standards or customer requirements.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

* Possession of a valid Class B Driver's License in the State of Minnesota where work assignment includes the operation of medium motorized equipment in excess of 26,000 pounds. Must have the ability to obtain a Class A License (CDL) within the probationary period

* Knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools used in trades work sufficient to assist skilled trades' staff in the completion of assigned projects.

* Ability to safely operate and maintain medium sized motorized equipment, e.g. dump trucks, snow plows, tractors, backhoes, forklift, front-end loaders, augers, chain saws, air compressors, welders, carpentry tools, electrical testing equipment, and other equipment as assigned.

* Ability to understand and follow oral directions sufficient to interpret and carry out verbal assignments in a safe and efficient manner.

* Ability to perform semiskilled trades work sufficient to complete minor trades plumbing, electrical, and carpentry assignments, including the installation and maintenance of plumbing, heating, and electrical systems and equipment.

* Ability to perform minor repairs and adjustments to machinery and equipment including general maintenance and minor repair of buildings.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Two years of experience in equipment operation and maintenance, site design and construction, and landscape/vegetation management or related skilled trades.

* Experience in medium sized motorized equipment maintenance and minor equipment repairs, e.g. dump trucks, snow plows, tractors, backhoes, forklift, front-end loaders, augers, chain saws, air compressors, welders, carpentry tools, electrical testing equipment.

* Knowledge of general construction methods.

* Working knowledge of civil engineering, landscape architecture and planning process, as applicable to recreation facility design and construction.

* First aid/CPR certification.

Physical Requirements

* Ability to work weekends, night, or holidays as assigned, as well as available for call-in assignments both before or after normal shift hours including weekends. For call-in/call-back assignments, the incumbent must respond within 30 minutes by phone and be onsite within one hour and 30 minutes.

* Strength and agility sufficient to load, operate and repair medium sized equipment and materials.

* Endurance sufficient to perform tasks under extreme environmental conditions, such as heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind.

* Ability to lift and carry up to 65 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds.

* Ability to perform tasks under extreme environmental conditions, such as heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind.

* Ability to push, pull up to 85 pounds.

* Ability to stand, walk, sit, climb steps, down steps, reach, finger and hand coordination

* Must be able to pass random drug and alcohol testing per federal DOT regulations.
