To further our mission of helping individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families live their best possible lives, the St. Louis Arc is seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual for a Community Support Specialist (CSS). This position will provide direct support to individuals with developmental disabilities in the Community Engagement program to help them achieve their goals. This position will provide quality supports through ensuring health and safety, enabling people to make decisions, and assisting people to understand and exercise their rights.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist people we support to plan a meaningful day that matches interests and goals
  • Support people to complete necessary grooming/hygiene including, but not limited to, assisting in restroom, with meals, and with dressing
  • Complete all documentation required according to Agency and funder timelines, including community events reports, medication administration records, progress notes, etc.
  • Support people to engage meaningfully in all activities both community- and site-based
  • Actively participate in Individual Support Plan meetings, trainings and team meetings
  • Demonstrate and support all St. Louis Arc Diversity and Inclusion practices/initiatives

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Required Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent *(some exceptions may apply)

Other Requirements:

  • CPR/First Aid (agency training provided)
  • Medication Administration Level - requirement varies by location (agency training provided)
  • Current auto insurance & Class E License or equivalent
  • Mandt – requirement varies by location (agency training provided)
  • As well as other agency online and class based training
  • Minimum Years of Experience:
    • One year of experience in customer service, education, medical or human services field preferred

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of best practices for supporting people with developmental disabilities.
  • Knowledge of community opportunities and resources of which to offer to people being supported
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally both verbal and written
  • Effectively and efficiently use database software including typing skills
    • Ability to work independently including making emergency decisions
    • Strong relationship-focused service and communication skills

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Walking up to six hours
  • Standing for up to two hours
  • Lifting items from floor to shoulder level (up to 75 lbs.) or for transfers or physical assistance of individuals
  • Travel 50-75% of the time to transport up to four individuals supported in both personal or agency vehicle
  • Work Environment consists of a typical work area in which the Community Support Specialist is a part time position, determined by the needs of the program site. Shifts are typically during the day, scheduled between Monday through Friday. Regular attendance is mandatory.
