To further our mission of helping individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities to live their best possible lives, St. Louis Arc is seeking dedicated, enthusiastic and compassionate individuals for the position of AWE Specialist.

This position is responsible for providing quality supports to aging individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities in activities of their choice. The AWE Specialist is expected to actively engage individuals in their community and at the program center with activities of their choice, and support individuals in addressing and achieving their individualized goals and outcomes.

  • Provide transportation to individuals to access community activities
  • Actively engage individuals in their preferred activities
  • Support individuals with adapting their environment or tasks to meet their needs as well as support mobility and personal care needs
  • Understand Individualized Support Plans (ISP), preferences and communication styles of individuals supported
  • Provide information to program managers about the well-being of individuals in program as well as provide information and/or feedback on individuals outcomes
  • Support individuals with personal care and hygiene supports
  • Adhere to agency and funding requirements while meeting documentation deadlines as well as quality expectations
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external Residential and Community Engagement programs
  • Demonstrate and support all St. Louis Arc Diversity and Inclusion practices/initiatives


  • Required Education:
    • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Other Requirements:
    • CPR/First Aid
    • Medication Administration Level 1
    • Current auto insurance & Class E License or equivalent
    • Mandt – requirement varies by location
    • As well as other agency online & class based training
  • Minimum Years of Experience:
    • 1 year experience supporting individuals with developmental disabilities, customer service and/or educational field


    • Knowledge/understanding of ISPs, supports and preferences of individuals
    • Ability to understand varied styles of communication
    • Ability to support individuals with a wide variety of cognitive and/or physical abilities
    • Knowledge of the aging process
    • Must be reliable and possess the ability to work with varying personalities and support needs
    • Must be able to make sound and immediate decisions in order to ensure the safety of people we support.
    • Must possess excellent communication skills
    • Have the ability to meet deadline
    • The ability to collaborate and work as a team
    • The ability to prioritize tasks
    • The ability to document/record events and supports provided


  • Walking up to 7 hours
  • Standing up to 7 hours
  • Lifting up to 75 lbs. – floor to shoulders
  • Travel throughout the St. Louis Metro area – for program purposes
  • Work Environment varies by events scheduled – both community based and site based
  • Equipment
    • Personal vehicle in good working order that has four seatbelts or agency issued vehicle
    • Equipment may vary by location and by individual, but may include (Computer, wheelchair, walker, gait belt, Hoyer Lift, assistance technology for communication etc.)
