DEPARTMENT: Deaf Academic Department (will be used to fill vacancies in Deaf Elementary, Deaf Middle School and/or Deaf High School)

FSDB SALARY RANGE – 10 months: $18,567.40 - $20,067.40 annually (paid biweekly over 26-pays). Salary is prorated for those that work less than a 10-month calendar. This range is inclusive of verified experience and education.

REQUIREMENTS: Completion of 60 college semester hours from an accredited institution; or Associate of Arts Degree or higher; or high school diploma and a score of 464 or higher on the Para Pro Assessment. Proof of education will need to be provided at time of interview.

PREFERRED: Bachelor's Degree; Knowledge of working with students with hearing impairment; Knowledge of American Sign Language.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: Applicants under consideration for employment at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind will be required to complete background investigation. Fingerprints will be taken and sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for a background check of your criminal history record(s) at the state and national level.

WORK LOCATION: Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind, 207 N San Marco Ave, St. Augustine, Florida

WORK HOURS: Monday – Friday, Hours vary

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The incumbent of this position works as an Instructional Assistant in a state-mandated academic program. Assists classroom teacher with: classroom instruction, redirection of students who are off-task, behavior management, role playing, planning and preparation for field trips and special events, recordkeeping, attendance, and grading class work. Develops learning materials for students (independently or as directed by the classroom teacher). Supervises students during school time, lunch time, recess time, and before and after school hours. Writes and submits student occurrence reports to the assistant principal on significant occurrences. Substitutes and maintains the instructional momentum of the program in the absence of the teacher. Assists students in understanding and completing classroom assignments. Provides remedial assistance to students having difficulty achieving objectives in their specific subject areas. Accompanies students on scheduled appointments and medical trips. Duties may include instructing and assisting students with activities of daily living which may include personal hygiene, toileting, and self-care tasks as assigned. Position may or may not having boarding duties, such as: supervises and instructs students in self-care skills and activities of daily living. Writes and submits written reports to the Director of Student Life on significant happenings during the residential period. Serves as a liaison between the boarding and classroom program. Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Knowledge of child/adolescent behavior; Ability to complete yearly training and administer skills acquired during CPR and CPI; Knowledge of principles and techniques of effective written communication; Knowledge of office procedures; Ability to operate general office equipment; Ability to plan, prepare and implement educational and instructional materials (with direction from teacher); Ability to implement and maintain individual programs (curricular and behavioral) for students; Ability to supervise and transport/escort students independently; Ability to work with children and adults; Ability to instruct and/or assist students in social and daily living skills, such as personal hygiene, toileting, and self-care tasks, etc.; Ability to communicate effectively and professionally verbally and in written form; Ability to plan, coordinate and execute work assignments; Ability to establish effective and professional working relationships with others; Ability to communicate effectively in the appropriate mode of assigned students; Ability to write incident reports and attend to detail; Ability to document and follow through on behavioral programs.

Applicants who are selected for hire will be required to attain Intermediate proficiency in sign language within one year of hire. Please note: The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind provides education to acquire sign language skills.

SPECIAL NOTE:

All members of the Florida Retirement System are required to contribute 3% of their salary on a pre-tax basis.
