Consultant, Enterprise Environmental Risk

The Enterprise Environmental Risk Consultant ensures a strong and cohesive environmental risk management program throughout Sutter Health. Leads and oversees the enterprise-wide environmental risk and risk mitigation functions through program development, mitigation, assessment, guidance, and education. Collaborates with Affiliate Safety Officers, Plant Operations Leaders, Security Management Leaders, Emergency Preparedness Coordinators, Hazard Materials and Waste Coordinators, Risk Managers, Environmental Service Managers, and system departments such as, Executive Leadership, Office of Patient Experience, Insurance Services, Healthcare Risk, Total Health & Productivity, and Accreditation & Licensure in developing pro-active risk management and loss prevention programs. Ensures effective coordination of risk, legal and regulatory aspects are addressed. Such activity is in support of system affiliates' efforts to identify and control risk, reduce and eliminate the possibility of losses associated with healthcare delivery and related core business activities. As a member of the Environmental Risk Team, the Enterprise Environmental Risk Consultant provides comprehensive environmental risk management consultation to affiliates relating to safety, security, hazardous materials, medical/chemical waste, emergency management, utilities, fire/life safety, medical equipment, and business continuity. Consultative activities include identification and assessment of high risk practices, development and implementation of loss prevention activities, ensuring adherence to regulatory and accreditation standards and industry recognized best practices. The Enterprise Environmental Risk Consultant reports to the Environmental Risk Director.


Bachelor's Business, engineering, insurance, and/or safety related emphasis required rr equivalent education/experience.


Healthcare Environmental Manager - HEM Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (HEM) 1 Year required.

Other Certified Safety Professional designation (CSP) Preferred

Other Physical Security Professional (PSP) preferred.

Other Certified Healthcare Facilities Manager (CHFM) Preferred

Other Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) preferred.

Other Associate of Risk Management (ARM) preferred.

Other CSTI Outreach Instructor Certification (CSTI) preferred.


Management experience in a healthcare and/or risk management setting is required.

Experience with Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) preferred. Preferred

Experience in program development and project management is required.

Must establish evidence of proficiency in managing key, sensitive working relationships required.

Skills and Knowledge

Demonstrated, current knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations, and accreditation and professional standards for Risk Control/Environmental Health & Safety programs pertaining to healthcare facilities such as Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, California Department of Safety and Health, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, The Joint Commission, California Department of Public Health, Environmental Protection Agency, National Fire Protection Agency, and Department Of Transportation is necessary

Must have the ability to effectively utilize consultative skills and maintain excellent interpersonal relationships within the department and at all levels of the Affiliates.

The ability to communicate verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner is essential.

The ability to organize, prioritize and direct projects to meet goals and objectives is required.

Must possess effective problem solving skills and the ability to work independently to achieve goals.

The ability to analyze data and recommend strategies to positively impact programs within the Affiliates.

The incumbent must be able to train adults effectively and have leadership skills.

Computer literate in a PC environment with ability to develop Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and graphs, and PowerPoint training materials required
