About the Position:

This position provides the employee with full benefits, vacation and sick leave. * Develops all phases of the Command history program, including a working plan, takes into account mission needs, projects of importance, impact on other internal and external organizations, time available, and the expertise of available staff.

* Researches complex historical, political, religious, cultural and economic factors in areas throughout the history of the Army.

* Produces wide variety of written products from short responses, history scripts, annual histories, command histories, and specialized studies utilizing standard formats, logic, structure, and documentation

* Communicates orally to present historical research studies, tours, and staff work products; interviews subjects orally to produce significant oral histories.

* Performs the total range of personnel management actions necessary to create an efficient, fair, and energetic work environment. Plans, distributes, coordinates, and monitors work assignments of others; evaluates work performance.

* Knows the organization?s missions and functions and how its systems work and operate effectively to include programs, policies, rules, and work rhythm.

* Analyzes events and programs using knowledge of historical events and their causes, indicators, and impact on particular civilization and cultures; collects and preserves documents.

Occasional travel - Business travel is up to 20% of duty time.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. BASIC REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet one of the following basic requirements for this position:

1. Degree: History; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, OR

2. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Evaluation of Graduate Education

Graduate study in the social sciences or humanities may also be credited when such study included training in historical research methodology; or the thesis approached the subject from an historical viewpoint and used professional historical research methodology and techniques in its preparation.


To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled such as: experience as a command historian demonstrating studying and understanding all significant aspects of the military command historical program. Serving as an expert advisor to a command regarding complex historical issues. Working in leadership role in higher level staff. Planning and writing substantial narrative command histories or historical accounts of military operations or local-military history. Operating in an official history program and interpreting/applying directives governing the program. Perform independent research for the preparation of responses to inquiries about the history of the command. Preparing for and conducting oral history interviews of senior military leaders or senior government officials. Managing the identification, collection, archiving, and use as research sources of historical materials to document and preserve organizational records and military equipment. Perform leadership functions by supervising other employees, providing assignments, and oversight of work. Developing and conducting staff rides for senior military and civilian personnel.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-13).
