International Student Counselor

Position Summary:

Provides comprehensive advising to undergraduate students in the College Center for Advising Services; advises students on academic matters including program planning, goal setting, academic progress, policies and procedures; refers students to faculty and other offices for specialized help. Provides specialized advising and programming for international students.

Specific Responsibilities:

Under direction of Director for International Student Engagement, with latitude for independent judgment:

* Manages the International Student Mentor program.

* Oversees international student early arrival and orientation.

* Completes required immigration paperwork for F-1 student visa maintenance.

* Plans and implements cultural, social, and educational activities and events for the campus community.

* Develops and coordinates services for international students.

* Oversees student mentoring software platform

* Provide direct assistance to undergraduate students seeking advice about program planning, academic resources, special academic opportunities, rules and policies, graduation requirements.

* Provide support to students in academic difficulty. Serve as a primary resource for students placed on academic probation.

* Monitor and process requests for independent study and internships; review and process transfer credit.

* May teach or co-teach a transition course for international students studying in the U.S. for the first time.


Bachelors' degree with a minimum of two years related experience in student services is required. Master's degree and overseas living experience preferred. Strong cross-cultural communication skills and cultural sensitivity. Familiarity with F-1 student immigration regulations. Excellent organization, time-management, writing skills and ability to build strong interpersonal relationships with students from diverse backgrounds. This job also requires strong problem-solving skills, a desire to coach and advocate for international students and a passion for assisting students as they formulate their educational and personal goals. Desirable skills include familiarity with Macintosh computer applications and FileMaker Pro.
