The Transportation Department has an opportunity for a Truck Mechanic in Riverside. The Truck Mechanic will work a 4/10 schedule and perform major and minor mechanical repairs and adjustments on a variety of medium and heavy duty diesel and gasoline trucks. The incumbent will repair or rebuild engines, transmissions, differentials, fuel injection systems, cooling systems, air and hydraulic brake systems, and electrical systems. Additionally, the selected candidate will perform engine repairs on smaller automotive equipment such as generators and welding equipment. The Department desires seasoned mechanics with at least four years of experience in the repair and overhaul of heavy diesel, gasoline, and alternative fueled vehicles and equipment. Incumbents should possess knowledge of AssetWorks or Faster computer based preventative maintenance software and the ability to maintain vehicle records in accordance with Department of Transportation (DOT) standards. Candidates who have strong work experience in addition to formal training/education in automotive/truck repair are highly desired. Competitive candidates will have welding experience, Basic Inspection of Terminals (BIT) program knowledge and/or experience working with Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:Inspect and diagnose mechanical failures and defects in a variety of heavy trucks.

Rebuild or repair engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, axles, steering gears, carburetors, cooling systems, and other mechanical and electrical assemblies.

Perform complete tune-ups on carburetion, fuel injection, and ignition systems.

Replace and adjusts air, hydraulic and vacuum brakes, starters, and generators.

Perform repairs on smaller automotive equipment when required; perform rough welding; keep time and material records.

RECRUITING GUIDELINES:EITHER I Experience: Completion of a recognized heavy duty truck mechanic apprenticeship training program. OR II Experience: Four years of experience in the repair and overhaul of heavy diesel and gasoline powered vehicles. Two years of the required experience may be substituted on the basis of: Completion of 12 semester or 18 quarter units in trade related courses taken at a recognized college being equal to six months of experience. OR Completion of 144 hours of trade related instruction taken at a union training center, adult school, vocational school or specialized industrial program being equal to six months of experience. Knowledge of: The principles of both gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines; the methods, tools, equipment, and parts used in the repair and maintenance of heavy trucks; the operations and uses of diagnostic equipment. Ability to: Diagnose the source of mechanical and electrical failures in heavy gasoline and diesel powered trucks; read and understand shop manuals and mechanical diagrams; follow written and oral directions; perform work safely.
