As-Needed Archaeologist

HELIX Environmental Planning, Inc. (HELIX), a growing, employee-owned California-based environmental consulting and planning firm, is currently seeking as-needed archaeologists who are based in Riverside County and will be affiliated with our Riverside County location, to work on our substantial backlog of Riverside County projects. These staff will report to our Cultural Resources Group Manager, who is located in our San Diego, California, headquarters office, and may occasionally need to travel to our headquarters office. HELIX offers environmental, biological, cultural resources, acoustical, air quality, and GIS services to both the public and private sectors.

As-Needed Archaeologist responsibilities will primarily include construction monitoring, but may also include records searches and background research, field surveys, excavation (testing and data recovery), lab work (cleaning, sorting, and cataloging artifacts), and assistance with report preparation. Candidates must: be comfortable with strenuous hiking and working in remote/desert areas; be knowledgeable of the archaeology and culture history of California; be self-motivated; possess excellent writing and communication skills; and possess a valid California Driver’s License with 3 years clean driving record. A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in anthropology or related field, experience in California archaeology; one year field experience, experience in completing DPR forms and proficiency in Access and Photoshop are considered a plus. Candidates must be willing to learn new tasks and must have a positive attitude.

  • Bachelor's Degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, or closely related field, or equivalent experience

  • Minimum one year of field experience, including construction monitoring in southern California

  • Knowledge of the archaeology and culture history of California
  • Ability to identify artifacts and cultural features
  • Possess a valid California Driver’s License and 3 years clean driving record
  • Ability to do strenuous hiking and work full days in remote/desert areas
  • Possess excellent written/verbal communication skills
  • Be self-motivated
