VCU Health System's Radiology Administration is seeking a Full Time - Patient Care Specialist. This person will provide advanced cardiac monitoring for patients moving between radiology and nursing units for diagnostic and therapeutic imaging exams, under the supervision of MD, a licensed independent practitioner, and/or Registered Nurse, in accordance with the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Nursing delegation and supervision guidelines. Coordinate patient handoff between self and RN for all monitored patients. Transport critically ill, procedural, and stable patients between radiology and nursing units, by wheelchair, bed or stretcher. Assist with a variety of direct and indirect patient care activities. These include assistance with activities of daily living, comfort care and nutritional support, and performance of selected diagnostic and therapeutic tasks and procedures as directed. Promote patient comfort for all age classifications of patients including pediatrics, adolescents, young adult, middle adults, and the elderly. Provide assistance to the nursing and technologist staff by performing EKG, inserting peripheral intravenous saline locks using universal precautions and phlebotomy responsibilities as directed. Indirect patient care activities include maintaining a clean safe environment, ensuring adequate inventory of supplies and equipment, transportation of biopsy tissue and other specimens, and data collection as pertinent to the patient population.


Functions under direction of a licensed independent practitioner, MD, and/or RN in providing patient care, support, and problem solving; all in accordance with hospital, nursing and unit policy/procedure.

Functions under departmental Standards of Practice (SOP) in the communications room and in the role of patient transport in collaboration with RN and Physician colleagues.

Job duties may include the handling, transportation, access to and/or contact with medications and related supplies.



High school graduate or equivalent

Current AHA ACLS Certification


Graduate of accredited EMT-P Program

1 year of active pre-hospital service

Current EMT-P certification in Virginia

Previous EMT-P work experience

Previous hazardous materials experience
