Part Time Museum Gallery Staff

The Science Museum of Virginia seeks several dynamic and energetic, part time Gallery staffers to join our team. This position delivers energetic live science presentations, interprets exhibit content, assists guests and answers questions concerning museum exhibits; presents hands-on science concepts, demonstrations, activities and workshops; delivers educational programs for Camp Ins, Outreach Trips, Cooking Demonstrations and Birthday Parties; partners with volunteer and paid staff to enhance the museum experience; anticipates guest concerns and proactively solves guest issues and needs. May be required to perform other duties as assigned. This is a physically demanding position requiring standing for long periods of time and lifting up to 50 pounds. Must be able to work evenings, weekends and holidays. Please note that this is a part-time position and will be scheduled for 29 hours a week on average with a maximum of 1500 hours in a 12 month period. No state benefits are provided.

Minimum Qualifications

Desirable candidates should be energetic, outgoing, and enjoy âbeing on stageâ; exhibit excellent verbal communication skills; the ability to successfully interact with people of all ages and backgrounds in an educational environment; truly enjoy engaging with and entertaining children and families; the ability to be a self-starter and work successfully with little supervision; the ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with staff; and the ability to effectively present content in both one-on-one and group situations in an engaging, compelling and entertaining manner in front of a live audience of varying ages. The successful candidate will also demonstrate effective problem solving skills, patience and flexibility. Must be available to regularly work weekends and occasional evenings.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in theater, teaching or public speaking; experience working with children of various ages; BS/BA degree (or in progress), from an accredited college or university with coursework in theater, science or education and/or experience in K-12 education. Previous experience delivering educational programs in informal and/or formal settings preferred. Museum experience a plus.
