The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking to hire an Assistant Director in Communications. *This recruitment is open until filled. VDOT is the nationâs third largest state-maintained transportation network with an annual budget of $5.4 billion. The successful candidate will be an exceptional communicator, proven leader and have expertise in a number of areas including strategic communications planning, executive communications, media relations, marketing and public relations. The Assistant Communications Director: â?¢Delivers a results-oriented strategic communications program that supports VDOTâs mission; leads and executes integrated strategic communications campaigns that captivate, engage and inform nearly 8.5 million Virginians â?¢Directs and oversees an internal communications strategy that effectively informs and engages 7,700 employees statewide â?¢Serves as strategic counsel and a trusted advisor to senior VDOT leaders; works directly with senior leaders on executive corporate communications including presentations, speeches, talking points, official statements and employee communications â?¢Has a proven track record of success in media relations; adept at crisis communications; helps manage a media relations strategy that drives a greater understanding and awareness of VDOT and its programs â?¢Identifies emerging trends and recommends new and innovative initiatives to grow VDOTâs communications program â?¢Manages the Communications Divisionâs budget; prepares, justifies and allocates budget and other resources â?¢Leads and inspires a team of professionals; sets and communicates clear priorities â?¢Serves as a media spokesperson; responsible for message development; participates in 24/7 on-call rotation

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelorâs degree in communications, public relations, marketing or related field, or equivalent experience. Progressively responsible experience at a senior or executive level, leading the public relations function, and supervising and motivating a team in the field of public relations or communications. Extensive writing and editing experience. Detailed knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including PowerPoint. Excellent judgment and creative problem solving skills. Strong digital skills in the use of technology and social media.

Preferred Qualifications

Masterâs degree, preferably with a concentration in public relations or communication, is preferred. Accreditation in public relations is preferred. Business literate in Virginia state government.
