Janitor

Wage: $14.17 -$18.09 per hour

The City of Redding is establishing an eligibility list for the positions of Janitor and Custodian. Individuals in these classifications perform a variety of janitorial/custodial work in City-owned buildings and public facilities. Currently, one full-time Custodian vacancy exists at the Police Department. Evening, night, weekend, and holiday hours required. The current vacancy, as well as subsequent full-time and part-time vacancies, will be filled from this recruitment.

Examples of Duties

Wet and dry mop floors; wax and buff floors; vacuum carpeted floors; clean and sanitize restrooms; clean windows; dust; empty and dispose of trash; observe basic security of City building(s) during non-operational hours and report discrepancies; perform minor maintenance of equipment or fixtures in the assigned areas; and perform related duties as assigned. May be required to operate a commercial ride-on carpet extractor and a high personnel lift for gaining access to ceiling areas.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge of: Appropriate cleaning, vacuuming, and sanitizing techniques, use of cleaners, commercial carpet cleaners, sanitizing agents, waxes and buffing compounds, and high-speed buffers.

Ability to: Interact effectively with the public and employees; operate all cleaning and polishing equipment necessary to the assignment; follow written and verbal instructions; operate a motor vehicle when necessary; and recognize a potentially unsafe or disruptive condition and report same.

Education & Experience: Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying; typical education would include a high school diploma or equivalent. Prior relevant experience desirable.

Special Requirements: Must possess the appropriate California driver's license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment. For vacancies at the Redding Airport, candidates must be able to meet TSA security requirements. For vacancies with the Police Department, passing an extensive background is required.
